General notability edit

TakuyaMurata, you removed the notability tag which had said this article may not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline. Can you show that the article meets WP:GNG? In your edit summary you said He is a winner of Autumn Prize, that’s significant in addition to being an invited speaker. Winning an award is only an additional criteria, and is useful when the basic criteria is met. See WP:Notability (people)#Additional criteria. Jay 💬 10:33, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

As I understand, winning a prestigious award or receiving a honor (e.g., an invited speaker at ICM) is sufficient; see e.g., wikipedia:Notability_(academics). As I wrote before, if the notability is in doubt, an AfD is a correct avenue to discuss the fate of the article. —- Taku (talk) 10:38, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and if you are concerned about the existence of independent sources, that seems clear: Googling with "荒川 知幸" yields many sources (although I am not sure which ones are the best). —- Taku (talk) 10:47, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I have not checked for foreign sources. If there are many, then it may meet GNG. I have now tagged the article with {{Sources exist}}. Jay 💬 11:49, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Primary sources edit

TakuyaMurata, you removed the primary sources tag with the edit summary sources are not primary (not primary to him). If IMPA (The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) conducted an event, and wrote about the event or its attendees on their website, they are a primary source. The Mathematical Society of Japan granting awards are writing about it and the winners on their website makes them a primary source. Can you show that they are not primary, and if they are not primary sources, are you saying they are secondary sources? Jay 💬 10:33, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

It’s a matter of what the primary sources are or how they are used in this article. An announcement by MSJ is not primary to the subject of the article. It’s like New York Times articles are primary sources in the article on New York Times but they are secondary in other context. What is important is that we use sources independent of the subject and the sources used in the articles are indeed independent. —- Taku (talk) 10:42, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
The sources do not discuss the subject independently. One says he was an participant at their talk, another says he was a recipient of their award. Their mention about the subject is with respect to themselves. Jay 💬 12:00, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I don’t know if I understand. None of the sources are then independent, right? E.g., newspaper articles can be about the subject of the article, while still being independent of the subject. It might help: what sources do you think you need to establish, for example, he was a winner of an award? How can we write an article on mathematicians, in general? (Note many are not famous enough that they are written about in newspaper articles.) —- Taku (talk) 03:36, 13 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Feedback from New Page Review process edit

I left the following feedback for the creator/future reviewers while reviewing this article: Looks like an WP:NPROF#C1 pass through numerous well-cited papers on W-algebras. Potentially WP:NPROF#C2-notable through the award..
