Approach by Great Britain & Ireland Olympic team

edit

This article states twice that Kiely was approached by GBI to represent them at the game and that his fare was offered. This is absolute nonsense and should be removed from the article. The proof of this is the fact that GBI did not send ANY athletes to any games until 1912. Prior to this the team was always made up of gentlemen who paid their own way. The key fact that proves this as nonsense is the fact that in excess of forty gentleman sportsmen had planned to travel to St Louis to represent GBI. However GBI refused to sanction any of them as representatives of GBI because of they did not wish to be involved in what they regarded as a haphazard games. Some still travelled and took part but officially there was no GBI team at the games. Kiely's relationship to team GBI only came after the games when the recorders of the games wished to state his Nationality. GBI at this stage stated that he could not be recorded as having competed for Ireland because no such Olympic team existed. As a result he was retrospectively recorded as competing for GBI instead.

Most of the text seems to be a copyvio from http://homepage.eircom.net/~ancaislean/carrick_people.html , and so I believe it should be deleted. Jan.Kamenicek 12:40, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Track AND field?

edit

Shouldn't the phrase "...the first Olympic multi-event track champion for 16 centuries." read "...the first Olympic multi-event track and field champion for 16 centuries." Keomike (talk) 04:31, 4 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
