Talk:Tom Askin

Sections edit

Is there some consensus for having rugby league biographical articles split into sections as this one is at present? Single-sentence sections are generally deprecated, although I do understand why it might seem to make sense in this instance. - Sitush (talk) 14:16, 10 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

The more I look at this, the more I think the article should be structured chronologically. We're an encyclopaedia, not bullet-pointed aide memoire. - Sitush (talk) 10:28, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

I've been bold and done it. The thing was driving me daft. (Or dafter). - Sitush (talk) 12:15, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sourcing edit

I've checked the Guardian and Times archives for this guy without success (a little bit surprised he's not in the former). If anyone has access to the British Newspaper Archive then a run through the local papers might be worth the effort. - Sitush (talk) 10:22, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's actually rather doubtful whether he would be notable if it were not for our special guideline for sportspeople. There seem to be so few mentions of him that he would fail WP:GNG. The local/regional newspapers, especially ones like the Yorkshire Post, would seem now to be the last resort. - Sitush (talk) 10:32, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Infobox stats edit

Not sure what to do about it but the Featherstone stats in the infobox are wrong because he played for the club at two different stages in his career. If the stats source differentiates those stages then there is no problem - we just have Featherstone as "club3" as well as "club1"; if it doesn't then I don't know how to resolve the seasons parameter to reflect the issue. As it stands, the box gives the reader the impression he was playing for Featherstone at the same time as for Castleford. - Sitush (talk) 11:01, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

He also seems to have played for Leeds and Newcastle - see Leeds Mercury, 18 March 1937, p. 9. - Sitush (talk) 11:12, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Actually, the FR stats do not appear to be sourced at all. Presumably they come from one of the Bailey books? - Sitush (talk) 11:53, 11 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

FreeBMD… primary, or secondary source edit

There is a debate at Wikipedia talk:No original research#FreeBMD as to whether FreeBMD is a primary source, or as I believe, a secondary source. Consequently FreeBMD related information, and references were removed from this article's lede paragraph, and an entire section entitled 'Genealogical information'. Would anyone have an alternative secondary source, that verifies the information detailed below? Or evidence that indicates FreeBMD is in fact a secondary source? Best regards.
