Personal

Maguire has been engaged to jewelry designer Jennifer Marlo Peel, daughter of her dad, Isn't every woman a daughter of her dad? This is an awkward sentence. VarunRajendran 23:35, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

What's with the "Son of late actor Wally Cox" comment? Not so, not so.

Pictures

I removed three of the pictures that were recently placed on this page. There was already a picture on this page and that seemed like enough. Also, three pictures of a shirtless Tobey Maguire add nothing to the content of the article. One of them looks like it was faked as well. --Jtalledo (talk) 14:52, 10 July 2005 (UTC)

OK, that's way too excessive, with the 2 shirtless photographs? How about some photos of him in other movies, like The Ice Storm or The Cider House Rules? There's more to the actor than that one scene in Spider-Man. --Madchester 07:00, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Irish-American?

I removed the category because I'd never seen anything to confirm it. Does anyone have a good source? JackO'Lantern 07:06, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

you're kidding, right? his name is Maguire. Also, if you just google "Tobey Maguire" & "Irish" you will see multiple claims, including from Irish print media. Maybe you should call him mum for final confirmation. Also, see: http://homepage.eircom.net/~kthomas/names8.htm "Maguire, with its variants MacGuire, McGwire etc, comes from the Irish Mag Uidhir, meaning 'son of the brown(-haired) one'. The surname is now extremely common throughout Ireland, with particular concentrations in Cavan, Monaghan and Fermanagh; in Fermanagh it is the single most numerous name in the county...."

I don't care what his last name is. We don't list based on last name. If you can find a reliable source that Tobey Maguire is actually Irish-American, feel free to restore the category. Mad Jack 08:52, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

That's ridiculous. Every American individual with the patrynomical Irish surname prefix of "O'" (O'Neil, O'Reilly, etc.) is listed on Wikipedia as an Irish-American, almost all of these have no sources and no proof for this claim. Yet, the Irish-American category stays because it is common sense. Tobey has an Irish name, Celtic physical features, and is listed on the websites of several Irish newspapers as an Irish-American. Therefore, since everyone else agree with me, the category should stay.

Where is he lised as an Irish-American? That's the only qualification to list him as such, if a reliable source did as well. That's what you need to find and present here if you want to list him, not anything else like last names. Oh, and if there are others listed because of their last names, you should remove the category and read through Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:No original research - we list people as Irish-Americans when reliable sources have said so, not because of last names. Hey, It's Spidey!!! --Yancyfry jr 04:24, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Maguire is an Irish surname from the Gaelic Mag Uidhir, which is from Odhar, the eleventh in descent from Colla-da-chrich, great-grandson of Cormac mac Airt, monarch of Ireland about the middle of the third century.

Yeah but Will Smith is also a very English name. Is Will Smith English? I don't think so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.149.124.209 (talk) 13:45, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Infobox picture

How come we have 3 pictures of him acting and none on the infobox?-Dark Dragon Flame 18 December 2006

Because fair use images in the infobox are being clamped down upon. DavyJonesLocker 01:17, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Spider-Man 3 is the end for Tobey

I just found out from Darkhorizons.com that Tobey MaGuire will not play Spider-Man after Spider-Man 3, here is the info taken from Darkhorizons, which I think should be relayed to his article page here on wikipedia:

"In Australia to promote "The Good German", Tobey Maguire has confirmed talk from last year that the upcoming "Spider-Man 3" will be the end for his affiliation with the superhero saga.

"To me it seems like this is a natural point for the team to break up because we have a lot of story conclusions that were going along for the main characters for the first two movies and we kind of tie almost everything up for the third movie," he tells The Courier Mail.

"It feels like a trilogy to me and it feels like the end" he adds. The comments match those of co-star Kirsten Dunst and director Sam Raimi who both seem to feel that this will be their last involvement in the franchise."

Does anyone else agree that this info should be placed on his page? - RVDDP2501 17:58, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes, and we need a picture of him in the box as well. TomGreen 19:41, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

ummm yeah.. jst wanted to make sure if Tobey is an austrlaian coz heard that he is and is related to Eddy maguire but jst wanted to make sure.. Anywhoo cyazz

Removed that ref and sentence and replaced it with an updated statement and stance from Tobey Maguire re Spidey 4. Berserkerz Crit 09:02, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Tobey goes back and forth on the whole Spider-Man 4 issue frequently; I suspect part of it at least is public negotiating with Sony/Marvel to see how badly Avi Arad wants to go on paying him double-digit millions per pic. Right now, he's on the "Maybe, if the script is right" tack, with Marvel and Sony saying they want a Spider-Man 4 and have supposedly set a date for 2010 on the calendar, according to IMDB. We should probably hold off on updating this again until a more definitive answer comes forth... Scarletsmith 22:18, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

What is up??

There is a surge in vandalism from unknowns today. WTF mate?????--DJSpeak your mind... 23:27, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

I just reverted to an older edit because there was some vandalism scattered through the article. Peace. Thief12 22:03, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Ebaumsworld is saying that he died today.

Hey guys it's also saying that he played a role in "The Gruffalo" as the Fox. However the main article for The Gruffalo states otherwise... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.209.43.131 (talk) 06:47, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

$100 USD is a redundant acronyn. I switched it to 100 USD —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.165.40.231 (talk) 16:19, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Footnote 40 is supposed to verify the claim in the preceding sentence that TM won 10 m USD playing Poker in Hollywood. At least that is my understanding of footnotes. However, the article under the link says no such thing!? --88.69.33.48 (talk) 21:29, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Name

"Most of Maguire's early life was faced with profound hardship as his name was commonly mis-pronounced. The correct pronunciation is actually "TA-HOE-BAY, derived from his Native-American heritage. Before accepting the role of Spiderman, Maguire's agent insisted that the cast and crew of the upcoming film learn to pronounce his name correctly."

I'm a future movie maker and i want Tobey Maguire for my directal motion picture Biker mice from Mars with him portraying Throttle. Because I think Throttle is a good role for him. Because Throttle has some action moves that would fit well. What do think of that role for him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.121.169.109 (talk) 05:11, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Erm, what? Any sources?

Tropic Thunder

the article says that he is uncredited, however the movie quite clearly says his name during the opening credits. (IDK about the closing credits) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.95.12.243 (talk) 08:46, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Actually, it doesn't. He's credited as the co-star of the Kirk Lazarus film Satan's Alley in the third of the three faux trailers at the beginning of the movie, but he's not credited in the main film's credits. Scarletsmith (talk) 16:27, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Recognition

Is Maquire associated with Spiderman to the point that it needs to be plastered onto the opening paragraph? He's been in plenty of films, and was popular before Spiderman. I understand that's been his biggest blockbuster, but he's been in plenty of hits. If this was a marginal actor who was only known for one role it would be different, but Tobey Maguire has name recognition that goes way beyond the Spiderman franchise. In a sentence, the presence of that statement seems seriously unnecessary, and kind of makes his career seem crappy. Further, unless the statement gets cited then it's just somebody's opinion. I certainly don't know him best for those movies. Diewelt (talk) 22:11, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Pictures

I've been reverting a switch of pictures to keep the headshot in the infobox (and the more recent pic of him at a premiere in a later section). Is there any consensus for preferring the most recent possible pic at the start of an article on a still active performer? If so, a crop of the later pic might be best.
