Courland Information

I reverted to include the information about Poland since I believe it to be historically relevant. The fact implies that the island was indirectly a Polish-Lithuanian territory at that time. That is certainly interesting information and one, whose accuracy is not contested. I really do not see a 'danger' of a 'German-Polish naming war'. I do not really see what Germany or naming has to do with that fact at all to be honest. Chelman 14:35, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

I have had people insert the fact that the Courlanders were Baltic Germans (probably at least partly true, since the land-owners were German of German-speaking). In addition, according to the Courland article, it was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and part of Livonia according to the map. So the information is both inaccurate and subject to the Gdansk/Danzig vote. It isn't relevant here - it would be more relevant to mention the Latvian connection. Having seen the revert wars over German-Polish naming and all the bad feeling and disruption it raises, I see no value in extending the battle to here. I am strongly opposed to this addition. The addition states nothing about ethnicity of the Courlanders nor does it pose a naming issue. It merely states and administrative connection. I would agree with you that the Courlanders were Baltic-Germans, they were, however under the administrative rule of the P-L commonwealth. The Gdansk/Danzig vote relates to naming issue, this is entirely not the case here. I didn't propose to change the title to New Courland ;). Furthermore the same information was already present in the article on The Gambia without any issues, i recently changed that as well to 'weaken' the claim on it being a P-L colony since it (just as Tobago) was only an indirect territory of the commonwealth.Chelman 14:54, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

This does tie it to the Polish-German naming war, which is about as disruptive a pov war as I have ever seen. The Polish-German rivalry has spilled over - I removed the German claim, and I am now removing the Polish claim. If someone cares to know about Courland, they just have to click on the link. This article has far too much about the Courland connection as it - it's unbalanced, and thus, violates NPOV. As it stands, almost 9% of the words relate to this rather minor episode. With your addition, 18% of the words will relate to this. In addition, inserting the Polish claim while removing the German claim also violates NPOV. Guettarda 15:11, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, because the file name even is "Flag of Trinidad and Tobago". And article of the other island, Trinidad, has no flag in it. 85.217.45.223 (talk) 15:15, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Former Latvian overseas colony

Pronunciation

killing of rich foreigners An elderly German couple was found murdered on a beach near their home in the southern Caribbean island of Tobago on Saturday, according to police. They had been staying at their home in Bacolet on the south west coast. The murders are reminiscent of another double slaying in October 2008 of an elderly Swedish couple, 73-year-old Ake Olsson and his 62-year old companion Anna Sundsval. Their mutilated bodies were found in a villa which they owned. Previous tourists have been attacked in Tobago. Murium and Peter Green were chopped by an assailant and left for dead, but luckily they survived the attack. "Autonomous island"

I see that I raised the "Autonomous island" question 12 year ago and no one responded. While it's my own fault for not following up, it's been 12 years, we could use a source.

Tobago has some degree of internal self-government, but it is also one of two constituent parts of the republic. So a claim like that needs nuance, and needs sourcing. Guettarda (talk) 22:44, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
