Surely you need a microscope to see the six sides of a snowflake ?

Hence surely replace "throughout history" with "since invention of microscope in about 1590AD! Tabletop (talk) 03:11, 9 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

While I know you posted this concern more than a decade ago, it might as well be addressed.
It is possible for some snowflakes to be large enough to be seen with the naked eye, given the right conditions for forming.
Additionally, While the microscope may have been invented in the 16th century, lenses and magnifying glasses have existed much longer.
