Talk:Timeline of aviation in the 19th century

Latest comment: 11 years ago by DerbyCountyinNZ in topic Harris's jump dubious

Throughout the timeline, the term “Montgolfière” is used as a synonym for “balloon”. To the air enthusiast/historian, “Montgolfier” implies a “hot air” balloon of the type first demonstrated by the famous brothers. The balloons most often referred to in the timeline were of the hydrogen-filled type, pioneered by J.A.C. Charles. While it doesn't constitute a point of serious controversy, the blanket reference to all balloons as “Montgolfières” seems both inaccurate and inappropriate. In 1804 Gay-Lussac and Biot disprove that the earth's pull decreases with height? So Newton and his gravitational law were wrong? Probably some bad translation or copy-pasting... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.46.2.65 (talk) 15:12, 17 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:La France 7-vols.jpg

edit

Image:La France 7-vols.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Notability of entries

edit

There are far too many trivial entries in this article. As it is an international article only entries which are of international notability should be included. These would include firsts and other record breaking achievements. Deaths and Births should be included in separate sections as with Year articles. Entries which are not internationally notable should be included in equivalent Country articles (which would require their creation). Robertson claim dubious

edit

This page makes the claim that Robertson took a balloon up to over 7km in 1803. That seems extremely unlikely and definitely needs further verification! It seems various other websites make similar claims, but apparently mainly based on misleading information from this Wikipedia page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.51.147.220 (talk) 21:17, 26 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Harris's jump dubious

edit

According to the Wikipedia article on Harris, Thomas Harris (aviator), the inquest at the time seems to indicate that Harris was found dead in the basket. 211.225.33.104 (talk) 04:53, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've added the cite from his article which has a different version of what happened and modified the entry to be less specific about how he died. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 05:20, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Steam-Jet Dart

edit

I deleted this from the timeline because it is just a design, never implemented. Please consider starting those articles, but it just doesn't seem like it rises to the level of an overall timeline item.
