Requesting page be moved back to its original title edit
On May 1, 2014, this article was moved without warning or discussion from "Timeline of San Diego history" to "Timeline of San Diego". The reason given was "concision". I object to that move and request that it be moved back. All the similar articles that I could find at Wikipedia include the word "history"; see Timeline of New Zealand history ,Timeline of Quebec history, Timeline of Scottish history. This is in fact a timeline of San Diego's history, as it was originally named; my reaction to seeing the title "Timeline of San Diego" was "Huh? What does that mean?" - On further investigation I find that in the past week or so, hundreds of articles were changed, by the same user, from "Timeline of Foo history" to "Timeline of Foo". So this is clearly a bigger issue than this one article. I have asked the author for clarification. --MelanieN (talk) 18:09, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hi MelanieN. Go ahead and rename the San Diego timeline article if you prefer the previous title. Some interpret "timeline" as implying history, so the inclusion of both "timeline" and "history" is redundant (see e.g. Talk:Timeline of Richmond, Virginia history or San Francisco). The "Timelines" recently renamed by me were in any case all created by me not too long ago, and none have had many additional editors. Since both "Timeline" title styles exist in Wikipedia, I figured I would be bold and go with the shorter version. M2545 (talk) 19:01, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your prompt response. As I commented at your talk page: I preferred the previous title, but you have made this change to hundreds of articles and no one (but me) has objected or even commented. I think that may amount to (at least passive) consensus, and I agree to let this new title stand so such articles will be consistently titled. In any case, if I want to link to this I can always use the old name; it is now a redirect. --MelanieN (talk) 19:27, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
