The monarchs edit

Should we include monarchial events, aswell. GoodDay (talk) 16:20, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

IMO, not unless they are of particular relevance to Canadian history. And to that effect, I can't think of any off-hand. Resolute 19:20, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I agree with lute. Someone has added minor technicalities about laws that ought to be dropped. eg Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin, in her capacity as Deputy of the Governor General of Canada, granted royal assent to ...etc Students users might be fooled into thinking that is important. Rjensen (talk) 19:24, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Having thought it over, I'm in agreement. Besides, introducing monarchial events, could risk a "UK + 15 other Commnowealth realms" vs "16 Commonwealth realms" type disputes. GoodDay (talk) 19:28, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Likewise, simple government changes or elections. I punted a bunch related to recent elections for that reason. Resolute 19:54, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Furthermore, we don't need the headache of a dispute over including/excluding the Succession to the Throne Act, 2013 & whether it's legal or not ;) GoodDay (talk) 03:13, 20 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Criteria for inclusion edit

I suppose we should look at what we want to include. I am a little unsure about the sponsorship scandal as potential recentism, yet I do plan to add an entry for the Pacific Scandal which seems a parallel. I suspect this list will always be challenging to maintain in terms of POV, recenism and oversaturation - i.e.: the risk of too many entries related

Other entries I expect to add over time, assuming someone else doesn't do it first:

Definitely
  1. Leif Eriksson discovering Vinland
  2. King-Byng Affair
  3. Ecole Polytechnique Massacre
  4. Repatriation of the Constutution
  5. Winnipeg General Strike
  6. Battle of the Plains of Abraham
  7. Pacific Scandal
  8. Formation of the Hudson's Bay Company
  9. 1980 and 1995 separation referendums
  10. Completion of the CPR
  11. Ottawa established as capital of Canada
  12. Women earn universal suffrage (1918) and Agnes Macphail as first female MP (1921) (could also add the SCoC's 1928 "women are not persons" ruling and subsequent legislative changes to overrule that)
  13. Canada's declaration of war on Germany
  14. The Flag debate
  15. Summit Series
Maybes
  1. Halibut Treaty (first international agreement negotiated without going through London)
  2. Founding of the National Hockey League
  3. Empress of Ireland disaster
  4. Quebec Act (1774) - which established British common law, French Civil law and guaranteed Roman Catholic rights
  5. Balfour Report

Other thoughts? Things I intend to add but shouldn't? Resolute 19:54, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

The Quebec Act should be more than a maybe. It's key to understanding why Canada has two different civil law systems, and plays a part in why a separate French nation has endured. I'd also add the first French settlements in Nova Scotia and Quebec to the list, and the expulsion of the Acadians. Meters (talk) 20:05, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I like the list. I might suggest dropping the Balfour report and emphasize 1931 Statute of Westminster. Rjensen (talk) 05:41, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
SIGNIFICANT EVENTS IN CANADIAN HISTORY and Important Dates in Canadian History. --Moxy (talk) 21:56, 28 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
If the King-Byng Affair is entered. Perhaps mentioning the British monarch George V in the summary, would be best avoided. Best to avoid any dispute over presenting him as King George V of the United Kingdom. GoodDay (talk) 04:20, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
I believe the recent edits at King-Byng Affair, prooves my concerns. GoodDay (talk) 05:06, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
If the King-Byng affair is included (which I think it should be), why would "British" or "of the United Kingdom" need to be mentioned? Each entry has a small summary; there is not the place to get into Canada's constitutional status or any other lengthy explanation to avoid George V appearing as some kind of foreign power. --Ħ MIESIANIACAL 05:12, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
You & I will never agree on this, so it's best we get input from others. GoodDay (talk) 05:20, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Again, if we do include, it would be best to avoid using a summary with the British monarch-in-question, who reigned over Canada at the time. GoodDay (talk) 05:15, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
If you include George V you have to use RS that discuss George's views on the matter. I think he personally ignored the issue (which Byng told him about) and should be left out. Rjensen (talk) 05:44, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
In agreement, we shuld exclude. GoodDay (talk) 05:43, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Link rot edit

since this is all past historical events I think its best we use scholarly books over links to subpar webpages that will be dead in a few months. -- Moxy (talk) 17:13, 21 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Gomery Commission edit

I don't see the Gomery Commission as being historically important enough for inclusion int his list. Meters (talk) 22:09, 21 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Removed. I still see no reason why this is notable enough for inclusion in this list and no-one had provided any justification. The Federal Court quashed some of Justice Gomery's conclusions, and criticized some of his actions during the commission. The Federal Court's decision was upheld on appeal. War of 1812 edit

Rather amusing that we have an entry on Laura Secord, but not one on the War of 1812. Better add that to the list of needed entries. Meters (talk) 23:05, 1 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Possible additions edit

These are some possible additions, although this isn't suggested wording:

1763: A British colony called the Province of Quebec is created [this would be additional to what's already written for 1763]

1784: New Brunswick is created

1841: The Province of Canada is created

1846: Oregon Treaty settles border in West between British North America and the US

1881: The addition of Arctic Islands from the UK

1947: Creation of Canadian citizenship

1965: Adoption of new flag

2017: Canada's 150th anniversary

A lot of the above are surely every bit if not more important than legalizing same-sex marriage!
