Talk:Timberview High School shooting

Draft edit

I recommend this be moved to Draft:Timberview High School shooting until the news settles down on the matter. There are still so many things we don't know about the subject, and WP:DELAY applies here as WP:RAPID refers to deletion (see: WP:ATD). - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 17:12, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose – It is common and accepted to work on events in the news live in article space. Replacing the title with a redirect is effectively deleting it as a standalone article, which is why WP:RAPID is still relevant. However, serious WP:BLP considerations must be taken into account, so as not to reveal the names of minors or harm reputation. - Fuzheado | Talk 17:20, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose This incident is likely to increase attention on the issues of school shootings and mass shootings. The nationwide reporting about the shooting and the subsequent manhunt are likely to have a lasting impact. Juneau Mike (talk) 21:24, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose move to Draft - This article meets General Notability Guidelines as it has received widespread, global coverage by news organisations. Not only from many US news publishers nationwide, but also from as far afield as the United Kingdom [1], New Zealand [2][3], and Singapore [4]. The purpose of draftifying an article is to allow time to develop a newly created article to demonstrate notability, or for an article about a subject of questionable notability to be developed and be found notable, rather than be deleted for non-notability. Editing policy advises that articles can be imperfect and usable content should be preserved and fixed in the main space. The draft space is for developing articles before they get to the main space. Also, if you want to move this article directly to Draft space then follow the requested moves process or the articles for deletion process. But I think the cat is already out of the bag on this one and there is no point trying to throw it back. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 08:53, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment I still don't see any WP:LASTING impact or in WP:DEPTH coverage here. Yes these headlines are going to grab attention.... this appears to have its flash in the news routine coverage and now others have moved on. I will give the benefit of doubt though, by waiting a few days before taking this possibly to AfD. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 13:19, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment School shootings often receive a lot of media coverage. Had a shooting such as this happened in a bar, nightclub, shopping mall or house, the media coverage would have been far less & it's highly unlikely it would have an article. Jim Michael (talk) 13:50, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment - this incident was basically a kid firing off a gun and hitting two people, the article should have been deleted yesterday. Yodabyte (talk) 23:24, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Three people were shot. Jim Michael (talk) 11:21, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jim Michael: This was tragic... but how does it compare to List of mass shootings in the United States in 2021? So far the standard has been followed: You have the splash in the news coverage, in this case the suspect has been arrested, media has moved on. In this particular case there is no more widespread coverage with the investigation. Im sorry... I know this article was created in good faith but I just don't see notability here. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 15:04, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
The media - and to a certain extend WP - treat shootings & bombings at schools & places of worship as inherently more notable than attacks at other venues. I'm not saying that should be the case, but there should be a discussion about this somewhere that will receive more attention than this talk page (such as the Crime project), because this issue will recur many times. As I said above, had it happened in a bar, nightclub, shopping mall or house it wouldn't have an article & the media coverage would have been far less. Jim Michael (talk) 15:13, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think every case is different. In this one there were no deaths (thank god), the suspect turned himself in willingly, and coverage pretty much died after 24 hours. Even if school shootings do get more coverage, these events should adhere to WP:DEPTH and WP:LASTING. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 15:37, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oppose – News coverage continues, in particular as the adult suspect has been released, even as a 15-year-old child victim remains in the ICU. It is common and accepted to work on events in the news live in article space. XavierItzm (talk) 23:06, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Okay and? On the local news the other night there was a shooting in x city with y hospitalized. its WP:ROUTINE coverage. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 04:06, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Delete - Article should have been deleted several days ago per WP:SNOW. Yodabyte (talk) 22:50, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • @Yodabyte: If you want to start an WP:AfD then I would support it. I have seen no lasting notability here other than initial media sensation. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 16:44, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I actually believe and Afd would be useful for this situation. Also @Yodabyte:, WP:SNOW wouldn't had been viable for at least 24 hours due to it being listed in the Current Event Portal. WP Current Events/Current Event Portal sort of make WP:SNOW and other policies like that nullified for a short period of time. 90% of articles, a SNOW would have been good for, but once it is listed on the CE Portal, all bets are off for at least a day, because any discussion to deleted or drafity that article at that point would be fought tooth and nail over how relevant it is...for that day.
