There must be an error either in the Wikipedia article or in the linked article describing Gánti's view. In his Az élet princípiuma the author states that there are 5 NECESSARY (obligatory) traits of life as well as 3 more traits which are facultative. So, the statement that "life should basically but necessarily have an autocatalytic subsystem consisting of metabolism and a replication process, and a membrane enclosing theses functions" is incorrect (or simply false).

According to the author himself, the obligatory features of live objects are:

  1. separation from the outside world (from the environment)
  2. metabolism
  3. internal stability, or homeostasis
  4. a subsystem of storage and processing information which is useful for the rest of the system
  5. regulation of processes inside the system

None of these features may be omitted in living organisms.

The additional, facultative features are:

  1. ability to grow and breed
  2. variability during replication (which is a condition for evolution)
  3. ability to die
