T. Gracchus' second Tribuneship
Tiberius was not in fact reelected to the Tribunate. He was Tribune for the year 133, and his unconventional and possibly illegal appeal to the hustings at the end of the year for a second Tribuneship in 132, led to the tumult which culminated in his death. I have added the reference (Mommsen) in the article.
Tiberius re-election attempt was not illegal, there were no laws against it, it was just one of Rome's many unwritten "constitutional" norms. Lerong Lin (talk) 08:52, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Tiberius did not break any laws
The entire Roman constitution is based on a number of unwritten norms that were known by every Roman citizen, and not running for an immediate re-election is one of them. Similarly, the disposal of Marcus Octavius was also not illegal, there were no laws against it. Marcus Octavius' repeated use of tribunican veto was also against the norm, tribunican veto were usually used to express one's opinion, indicating the issue is has not reached a consensus, not a definite veto against the popular interestLerong Lin (talk) 08:50, 6 December 2020 (UTC).
- While I am wholly aware of the "it wasn't illegal" position, after examining some of the sources I had at hand, the ones which discuss the legality explicitly did not rule out consecutive re-election as illegal. Eg
Gruen 1968, p. 57. "It is possible that this attempt [for a second tribunate] was in violation of Roman law"
