- The 'Thulean PLateau' part of the North Atlantic Igneous Province was formed over a period of a few million years from about 62–54 million years ago, so overlapping with the PETM. This paper suggests that it was uplift associated with the break-up along the NW Atlantic rather than the volcanism itself that was responsible, by releasing methane from methane clathrates.
