Not sure what his alcoholism really has to do with it.

I agree about the alcoholism... certainly not a motivating factor. I left it in there for the time being, though I did add some info about his origins. A good summary for Sutpen exists at http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/~egjbp/faulkner/glossarys.html#Sutpen_Thomas. I think most of it could/should be incorporated.
