A notable figure in Linguistics, Givón should have a Wikipedia entry; in fact, it should be expanded. I wonder if I'll ever get around to being more active here, but I'll try and remember this as a project for when I do. :)

Thomas?! edit

I know he goes by "Tom" but his full first name is Talmy. This page should be renamed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Trecht (talkcontribs) 06:07, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

The situation is more complex: He is usually called "Tom" by his colleagues, but in scientific publications he only goes by the initisal "T.". So I think this page should actually be moved to "T. Givón", because his primary fame is as a linguist. As a novelist, he uses the name "Thomas Givon" -- this should also be mentioned somewhere.--Haspelmath (talk) 22:21, 27 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
A snippet in google books says that he was born Tamly and changed his name to Thomas. But I don't have that book "Bastard tongues: a trailblazing linguist finds clues to our common humanity in the world's lowliest languages", which also seem to have a brier bio of his. Given that his Emeritus page at Oregon doesn't exist (anymore), I guess we have to wait for him to die so some in memoria are published in the linguistics journals so this page can be improved. I don't think he goes by Tom but is still legally named Talmy. Anyway Thomas isn't really a good option as he never uses that in linguistic work. I would second a move to Tom Givón or T. Givón.·Maunus·ƛ· 12:56, 20 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the article was renamed to the current name after an OTRS ticket, so presumably the request came from the subject. In the mean time I found his home page, which only has "T. Givón", so that isn't of much help. Tijfo098 (talk) 20:00, 21 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I would like to add a section regarding my father's (Tom Givon) non-academic publishing career. He has published a novel with Reagan books (Running Through the Tall Grass), and is currently self publishing a series of novels through his own publishing house (White Cloud Publishing). I would like to list his published novel and his self-published novels, and would also like to add two external links; one to his publishing house (http://www.whitecloudpublishing.com) and one to his blog (http://tomgivon.blogspot.com/). A list of his self-published novels can be found at http://whitecloudpublishing.com/books.html. Thank you, and please email me with any questions regarding my request. "One of the founders of functionalism" edit

Functional linguistics was actually started long before Givón's birth... this must be a joke! Givón's not even a functionalist in the first place. The quoted source says he's a cognitivist, but his approach shares similarity with functionalism. Revision required. Weidorje (talk) 17:20, 9 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
