"Twenty-Third Street Church" = "Calvary Baptist Church"?

Calvary Baptist Church was located on 23rd Street (Manhattan) until the construction of a new sanctuary at a different location in 1883/1884.[1] A biography of Dixon says he was pastor of the "Twenty-Third Street Baptist Church" in 1889.[2] A book on the Klan in NYC mentions the Calvary Baptist Church and Dixon on the same page, but never mentions a connection between them.[3] The list of pastors of Calvary Baptist Church doesn't include Dixon. This 1875 New York Times article always calls it "Calvary Baptist Church", not the "Twenty-Third Street Church".[4] Here is the edit by Deisenbe which says he was pastor of Calvary Baptist by linking.[5] The link is also made in the Dixon template, Template:Thomas Dixon Jr.

One possibility is that Calvary left the 23rd St. sanctuary and then Dixon or some group rented it out. So Dixon may have been pastor of a church occupying the former site of the Calvary Baptist Church, but that he was not pastor of Calvary Baptist himself. Is there any evidence to the contrary? This has been a while and I don't remember much. I think Dixon was invited to leave Calvary because the crowds didn't fit in their hall and too much was being spent on renting another venue. At some point, Calvary was not meeting in the Calvary building. But this is my vague memory. deisenbe (talk) 17:47, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
