Militia v. vigilantes
editBecause Judge Beattie was a parish official, he had authority to recruit armed men. Historian James Keith Hogue describes it as a large group of 300 men - a paramilitary group, similar in action to the White League. As they had official sanction, they are not exactly vigilantes.
