According to the article "Thermal treatment" is "a term given to any waste treatment technology that involves high temperatures". It's a name given to any treatment of just about anything involving changed (usually elevated) temperatures; it's not in any sense limited to waste treatment. Baking ceramics in a kiln is "thermal treatment'. Come to that, baking loaves in an oven is "thermal treatment". Easing the pain of arthritic joints with a warm pack is ... thermal treatment.
