I have just reverted the addition to this article by Ww2censor of the {{overlinked}} tag.

The article does indeed have a lot of links to other articles, but that's because of the material involved. There are three separate strands to this man's life -- navy, parliament and lichenology -- each of which intersects with a lot of other topics. Plus there is his family, who were B-grade members of the Anglo-Irish oligarchy for over 150 years, and who intersect in several ways with Theobald's career.

I have tried to avoid linking common terms, and repeating links to the same topic. Where have I gone wrong? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:15, 8 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

BHG, I was not trying to be especially picky and I did not have much time to correct them at the time but noticed a few double links that I felt are unnecessry, especailly because there are quite a few other links, even though they are not to the common words. By no means is it as bad as some articles I've seen but the ones I saw are: Marquess of Waterford, Marquess of Londonderry, Church of Ireland, Londonderry (UK Parliament constituency) and Theophilus Jones (1729–1811) each linked twice, though some are piped. ww2censor (talk) 21:36, 8 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, ww2censor. I didn't think you were being picky -- I just couldn't see which links were overused.

Per WP:OVERLINK, when an article gets this long I think that even if a term has been linked in the lede, its helpful to repeat the link when the term is used in a more precise context. Marquess of Waterford and Church of Ireland and Londonderry (UK Parliament constituency) fall into that category.

I have unlinked the second usage of Theophilus Jones (1729–1811), and replaced the second link to Marquess of Londonderry with a more specific one, to the 3rd Marquess.
