Talk:The best defense is a good offense

Citations edit

The citation for Sun Tzu & Machiavelli seem insufficient. The only thing the linked citation says in relation is "The same principle is echoed in the writings of Machiavelli and Sun Tzu." which is literally the same thing that is said in the article. If this is going to be cited as accurate then the two authors should actually have their work cited where these statements occur. An example of this would be “Attack is the secret of defense; defense is the planning of an attack.” -Sun Tzu, Art of War. I also believe this is why Machiavelli is being referred as to having said such. TiffyWiki (talk) 17:35, 10 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

It's a famous quote, but who should it be attributed to? RJFJR (talk) 16:17, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think it's basically anonymous. Aldrich Hanssen (talk) 16:31, 31 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't know the source, either, but I'm pretty sure it originated in American football in about the mid-20th century. Sounds like something Vince Lombardi would say. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.33.158.121 (talk) 13:50, 19 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Looked it up: Wiki Answers attributes it to Clausewitz, not Lombardi. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_said_the_best_offense_is_a_good_defense —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.33.158.121 (talk) 13:57, 19 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Remarkably similar to Admiral David Farragut's quote, "The best protection against an enemy's fire is the steady and well directed fire of our own guns." Attributed in AT Mahan's 1898 McClure's Magazine Article] on the war with Spain 67.180.20.166 (talk) 10:51, 20 February 2011 (UTC).Reply

Invasion edit

The article gave me the impression that the consensus among military strategists is that initiating an invasion is a better option than resisting an invasion on one's own soil. Is my impression valid? 213.109.230.96 (talk) 22:29, 4 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'd say that's a fairly valid interpretation, though I'd disrecommend assuming it's a universally-applied sort of consensus. In military strategy it's more just the idea that if military interaction is the best option, there are a lot of reasons to have it happen elsewhere than on the homefront, e.g. higher public morale, less risk of heavy infrastructural damage, less casualties, etc.. Basketball edit

The adage doesn't apply to this sport because basketball teams always have to attack and defense all the time. It isn't like soccer that teams can choose an offensive or defensive strataegy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 181.91.131.93 (talk) 18:18, 24 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Foxed edit

As written, the page seems to focus on strategic & grand strategic issues, but Rommel was a strong advocate for tactical aggressiveness, even in defense. IMO, this merits inclusion (I don't have my copy of his bio at hand, or I might add it). Disagreements? TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 17:49, 27 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
