The central character is Emmet Keogh (Ken Hutchison.) The book was rather grim, set in 1922 Mexico. Keogh is an ex-IRA member who had just killed his brother in an attack on occupying English forces. Jennings(Victor Buono; "Janos" in the book) is an informer, gun runner, what have you; anything to make a dishonest buck. In the movie, he had also informed for the Black and Tans (a group of cruel, elite rifleman working for the British Occupation forces in Ireland.) The Indian woman, Chela (Paula Prichett) was an "Imarra" princess in the movie, but the book, set in Mexico, describes her as Yaqui. There are many humorous uses of lines from "Alice in Wonderland" and a sarcastic parody of the Catholic Church. Mitchum plays his third and final role as a bogus priest (Night of the Hunter, 5 Card Stud) ; he is at his cool best, while Buono plays it up with his usual grand style. Hutchinson is almost cast as a fall guy and the comic relief. His bowl hair cut seems reminiscent of the early Beatles or Davey Jones' cut.

Robert Mitchum drives a Lincoln touring car, while it was a Mercedes-Benz in the book.

The use of the car and M1 grenades and 1921 Thompson guns is accurate for 1922. The author, Jack Higgins, writes enjoyable adventure books, many in the genre of Tom Clancy. I believe this is Higgins' only work brought to the screen.

While not technically a "Zapata Western", this is an enjoyable adventure/farce that is still a delight with its action, character development, wry lines, and scenery/cinematography.
