Perhaps someone can solve this apparent discrepancy: "It was first published in 1954 in Galaxy magazine." is stated, but the magazine cover and figure caption show January 1955 as the publication date. To make matters even more confusing, the Wikipedia article on Philip K. Dick's story "Adjustment Team", published late 1954 in Orbit, is described as being influenced by this story, apparently published later. What information is missing from this puzzle? The title was given to several writers by (presumably) the editor. I have an anthology giving both the Fred Pohl and at least one other story which, naturally, have the same title. Digging that out would take some time if this point needs published verification. However any interested party may be able to sort out this apparent confusion in the light of this information.

The story appears indeed in Galaxy 1995-01 (Volume 9, no. 4). Available at the Archive:

Also, the template This article needs additional citations for verification is silly. Verification regarding a Sci-Fi story? Sure thing. Removed.
