I think there should be some clarification/disambiguation between "The Sydney Institute" (the subject of the page) and "Sydney Institute" or "Sydney Institute Colleges" which is a NSW state government educational institution with AFAIK no relationship to the former. The Sydney Institute Colleges (founded in 1891) are much older than the Right-wing think-tank (founded in 1989) of the same name. 124.168.53.208 (talk) 01:15, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

"Conservative" and "Think Tank" labels

The Sydney Institute describes itself as "a privately funded not-for-profit current affairs forum encouraging debate and discussion." It is also described in the Hannan/Carney reference as "not a think tank."

As for the conservative label, the institute claims to be "genuinely pluralist" and seems to live up to that. A quick look at recent speakers shows Christine Milne, Craig Emerson and Liz Jackson in the last month or two. Each of these is firmly of the left. I think we'd need some fairly strong references showing that the organisation (not Henderson himself) is conservative before applying that label.Thepm (talk) 03:52, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

The Sydney institute has been described as a "think tank" before [[1]], though this has been specifically denied by a article published by the chairperson of the organization. This seems a classic example of WP:weazel and VS. WP:Label.

Some people would argue the term "lobby group" or "think tank" are value ridden labels and introduce bias, while others would say orginizations must be described in common english that is clear to users and that alternate names are neologisms designed specifically to avoid common and accurate labeling --Willthewanderer (talk) 04:52, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
