This masterpiece is one of the bleakest films ever made. It's also clear that Maria Braun is intended by Fassbinder to be a metaphor for West Germany. Oswald-Hermann agreement

"Oswald, who unknown to Maria has a terminal illness, secretly visits Hermann in prison and makes a deal: if, on his release, Hermann stays away from Maria until after Oswald's death, Oswald will leave him his company."

I'm not sure this was the content of the agreement... Is this hinted in the film?--Shaio 20:38, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
