First Fantasy movie to win best feature film ???

First Fantasy movie to win best feature film ???

NOPE. 1948 winner , Hamlet, winner Hamlet is not horror, or sci fi, and features a ghost as a very important character. The plot of the story is very melodramtic, featuring numerous strange , totally impossible, coincidence and therefore it is a fantasy in many ways, with many characteristics, such as the melodramatic characters, the twisty plot, the the characters do bizarre things for bizarre reasons, and the way even the humans don't behave as humans would.. there is no one hero, they are all heroic. Sorry to post so much about hamlet, but its because hamlet was the first fantasy story to win best film, in 1948 rather than 2004.

Hamlet does indeed contain a ghost, but I have never heard it ever described as a fantasy, not the play or the film itself. Andrzejbanas (talk) 12:28, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

Comparison with the source material

This section is fairly well done and nearly complete. I have some vague comments on possible improvements. Some more general things might be added: for instance the level of violence in the film far exceeds the more "tasteful" (if one may put it that way) handling of war and killing in the book. I think there is a site called bodycount.com (or something like that) that gave this film the highest rating ever for on-screen deaths. Also, to criticize this section, although as I said, it's fairly complete, it could be better organized to show how the subplots of the book (the love triangle between Aragorn, Eowyn and Arwen; Faramir and Eowyn; Pippin's friendship with Beregond; the history of the Dead; Aragorn's steps toward the kingship and his magnificent landing flying the royal flag of Gondor after sailing the ships up the Anduin, etc.) are ruined and bastardized by Jackson's cavalier Hollywoodization of the source material :-). I was amused by the sentence "Originally, an even greater deviation was planned: Frodo would heroically push Gollum over the ledge to destroy him and the Ring, but the production team eventually realised that it looked more like Frodo murdering Gollum" as this was the way the Mount Doom scene was handled in "Bored of the Rings" (Frodo trips Gollum and says "oops" or something like that) and I wonder if Jackson realized that this would be a true howler if he filmed it that way. 24.27.31.170 (talk) 13:47, 19 July 2011 (UTC) Eric

In fact did anybody ever guess (well, I did) that Gollum fell into the fire because previously cursed to do so by the Ringbearer?--93.133.217.229 (talk) 12:48, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Box Office Records

Transformers: Dark of the Moon has surpassed it, pushing it down to 5th. Can someone put this in? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.153.144.133 (talk) 18:38, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Country of origin of the films

United States should be listed as a country of origin of The Lord of the Rings films alongside New Zealand because they are US-New Zealand co-productions. Moreover, the American Film Institute (AFI) awards which honours the best "American" movies has included The Lord of the Rings in various best movie lists. See AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies (10th Anniversary Edition) and AFI's 10 Top 10.

"Comparison with the source material" unreferenced section tag

I wasn't sure what to put here. Basically, it looks like original research. We aren't allowed give extensive discussion to this kind of topic unless it has been covered in reliable secondary sources. Since it probably has, sources should be found and added. (I know one source is already cited but ... templates for sections are restrictive!! I wanted one that said "This section may contain original research" or "This section appears to be based entirely on primary sources" or something.. >_< ) elvenscout742 (talk) 06:42, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

The "Comparison with the source material" should be eliminated. It consists mainly of irrelevant information and original research, it has like two references for like ten paragraphs. Almost no article about a film based upon a book has a section like this, and no article should. Details like "When Sam returns to the Shire he isn't shown to live in Bag End (where he dwells with Rose in the book), but in an unknown Hobbit-hole" have nothing to do in an encyclopedia. someone messed up the intro paragraph?

I guess someone was editing the intro paragraph and entered something wrong, because it's just a lot of typing where there should be a box to hold the info... can someone fix it to make it look like it should? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.211.176.4 (talk) 09:48, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

The Tower of Cirith Ungol

In describing where the orcs carry the paralyzed Frodo, the text names the structure “Sauron's fortress”, which to me would refer to Barad-dûr.

I've changed the link from Cirith Ungol (the pass) to Tower of Cirith Ungol, and changed the visible name to “watchtower guarding the entrance to Mordor”, matching the description in our article on the Tower.

Weird statement at box office

The substantial increase in initial box office totals caused optimistic studio executives to forecast that The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King would surpass The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in total earnings. If this proved to be true, then this would be the first blockbuster movie trilogy for each successive film to earn more at the box office than its predecessor, when all three films were blockbuster successes. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King has helped The Lord of the Rings franchise to become the highest-grossing motion picture trilogy worldwide of all time with $2,917,506,956, beating other notable ones such as the Star Wars trilogies,[55] and surviving from being out-grossed by subsequent trilogies like Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter, despite ticket price inflation.

Come on, this is already 2015, it already happen, so does it happen? Does it proved to be true? Is LOTR is the first blockbuster movie trilogy for that? Why do that statement feels like it still a prediction instead of a fact?

Running time

I remeber not so long ago, the infobox on the right hand side of the page used to list the running times of the theatrical release as well as the extended release. This seems to have been removed for some reason. Could we get that put back in? It's useful and relevant information. --Sauronjim (talk) 09:29, 18 October 2015 (UTC)

"It was only the second film to gross $1 billion worldwide" ?

The article writes that it was the second film to reach 1 billion worldwide. According to this list, 4 movies reached 1 billion before 2003.--Ezzex (talk) 16:42, 18 March 2016 (UTC)

Are the numbers on the worldwide list adjusted for inflation? Lapadite (talk) 12:11, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
