Possible inspiration?

edit

I wonder if Harry Paget Flashman was an inspiration for Captain Tylor? They both join the military as a way of shirking responsibility and figuring that it'd be the safest place to be. They also both recieve high honors and awards even though they've royally screwed up and had no clue what was going on as they tried to save their own skins.

No, Flashman was a cad! Tylor was more of an incredibly lucky idiot - bit like Maxwell Smart mixed with the casualness of Huckleberry Finn.

Anyone going to compose an article on the spaceship? 157.128.148.150 00:41, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Actually, Tylor seems inspired as a parody of Yang Wenli from Legend of Galactic Heroes. They do somewhat physically resemble each other. Yang joined the military just to get an education hoping he could just be a history professor but his historical knowledge of military strategy unwittingly won a space battle and saved his CO's butt. Yang is promoted and the rest is history.Mr. ATOZ 15:56, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nationalism or Parody?

edit

The flag of the United Planets is heavily influenced by the Japanese flag, save for the Green starburst on the upper right-hand corner of the Hinomaru (Rising Sun). Also, the character of Lt. Yamamoto may be related to Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. Could this be seen as Japanese Nationalism or parody in the same vein as Earth in Futurama? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.33.138.165 (talk) 06:35, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Giving the fact that the whole show is a parody of the classic japanese military and its utterly illogic "Code of honor" (in my opinion, this is highlited the most when - at the end of the series - Yuriko realizes that Tylor is simply thinking and acting NORMALLY, as the nice dude he is, whereas her and the rest of the military are clearly outside normality, and probably - in some way - MAD), the choice is simply logical.

It's not as much as nationalism, as to let clear who is the true recipient of the series irony. And, giving the resurgence of militaristic propensions we've seen in recent years of japanese politics, remembering yet again the younger generations that the army is inherently made up by lunatics, it is probably not be the worst subtext you can put in a comic anime... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.46.210.249 (talk) 11:21, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Light Novels

edit

It would be nice if someone who knows the light novels would also write something to them. --Stan T. Lor (talk) 23:02, 16 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

RiP Hitoshi Yoshioka

edit

In case anyone here wasn't aware, the original creator of Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Hitoshi Yoshioka, passed away earlier this year (January 13) as revealed by The Kaoru Asakura Theater Company. I just read about this at ANN (who published the news on Wednesday earlier this week). Here is the link. Hitoshi Yoshioka was 62 years old, may he rest in peace. 46.59.110.154 (talk) 04:25, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
