Number of Elders edit

I removed the reference to there being 12 Elders, because even counting Aung San Suu Kyi, there were still only 11 mentioned. - Mark Dixon 11:15, 23 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Change entry edit

This entry is to POV, most people do not descirbe Jimmy Carter and Kofi Annan as statesman.65.96.135.42 21:42, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

"most people do not descirbe Jimmy Carter and Kofi Annan as statesman." Perhaps the most pathetic Talk Page comment in the history of Wikipedia. Seriously, learn to spell and use proper grammar. Stonemason89 (talk) 18:37, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Li Zhaoxing. edit

Li Zhaoxing isn't listed on the website, is he still a part of the groups? http://www.theelders.org/elders/

--Iclavdivs (talk) 01:55, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ex-ambassador Li Zhaoxing of China expressed some concerns with the conflicts between the culture of universal values and the national interests of China. The former is characterized by concepts like human rights, democracy and political freedom as defined by the West, whereas the latter, according to Mr. Li, should be advanced by the Chinese nation as a group with its intrinsic traditions and values, defined by its current state of political development. In this light, Ambassador Li is reluctant to act in this small group as an individual apart from the Chinese nation's collective deliberation on issues that are highly sensitive to China. He was given a graceful exit in favor of "more important priorities at home". —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruhnama (talkcontribs) 04:05, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ambassador Li was otherwise known to be an unyielding patriot and fierce fighting cock. He has more than once shocked foreign reporters with his unambiguous and non-negotiating stance when defending the human rights conditions and territorial integrity of his country. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruhnama (talkcontribs) 04:09, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Li Zhaoxing is not a member of The Elders. I have added a citation about his attendance at the launch. (Ldickinson (talk) 15:37, 1 April 2010 (UTC))Reply

Section Middle East Mission edit

The section "Middle East Mission" mentions that the mission will take place, but the dates doesn't include the year. The references indicates that the year is 2008 and since that was last year the section needs to be reworked, maybe it should also include a report from the mission.

Introductory paragraph edit

The current description is based on reporting of the launch in 2007 and no longer accurately reflects the organisation's stated aims and priorities. I would suggest changing it to read as follows:
The Elders is an international non-government organisation of public figures noted as elder statesmen, peace activists, and human rights advocates, launched by Nelson Mandela in 2007. The group's aim is to "offer their collective influence and experience to support peace-building, help address major causes of human suffering and promote the shared interests of humanity."

Note: I have removed the reference to 'global' Elders - please see discussion topic 'Title of Article'. (Ldickinson (talk) 15:38, 1 April 2010 (UTC))Reply

Background edit

I have updated the Background section to reflect the current membership of the group. Previous entry only highlighted those Elders present at the announcement in 2007. (Ldickinson (talk) 15:41, 1 April 2010 (UTC))Reply

Global EldersThe Elders – On 27 July 2010 consensus was reached that it is incorrect to refer to this organisation as The Global Elders and the article was duly moved to The Elders. The Wikipedia entry consistently refers to The Elders and that is the name used by the organisation as well as the majority of media sources referring to the group. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:The_Elders_%28band%29#Requested_move Given that the related category was not re-named, it was proposed on 15 November 2010 that for consistency the category name also be changed to The Elders. However, following a brief exchange, the result was that the article was changed to the Global Elders, rather than the category. Given that The Elders is the correct name of the organisation, I would like to request that the article and category both be changed to The Elders. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2010_November_24 Ldickinson (talk) 14:05, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

about how to update in case of death of an Elder edit

I have been in email contact with The Elders, asking why the group is not growing. According to their volunteers, no expansion of the group and no further invitations into the group are planned, yet it is clear that the group shall grow. I strongly suspect that the Group will stay as it is as long as none of The Elders dies. It gives the current Elders a reason to keep on living. If you do the actuarial tables, or life tables, you will see that the current situation, that none of The Elders died so far, is highly improbable. Chances that one of The Elders will die within the next year are high. I suspect that when one of The Elders dies, immediately between one and three new members will be invited into the group. I also suspect that when one of The Elders dies, especially when it becomes clear that the group can cope with that tragic event, the chance of others passing away might skyrocket.

So in case of death, assume more changes to follow up. Assume, and look for, new invites into The Elders, unfortunately also look for more death. 178.2.53.85 (talk) 03:58, 8 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Two new Elders: Hina Jilani and Ernesto Zedillo edit

It just got announced at www.theelders.org

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hina_Jilani http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernesto_Zedillo

Announcement published 11. July 2013, the press release: http://www.theelders.org/article/kofi-annan-announces-two-new-elders-hina-jilani-and-ernesto-zedillo

Best Regards --178.10.105.12 (talk) 15:25, 12 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I now decided to be bold and added them to the list of Elders, together with the date when they joined.

Stuff to do:

  • Adding more info about Hina Jilani and Ernesto Zedillo. So far i only wrote that Zedillo is a former President of Mexico. (EDIT: Done)
  • Adding this event to the segment about the history of the group (EDIT: Done nicely, the history-section got a nice update)
  • I think more dates should be added, like: When did members join, or step down, when did members become Chair or Deputy Chair, when did members move from being an active member to being a honorary member? (EDIT: Done, with good sources)
  • All current members, except for these two and Martti Ahtisaari, are original members and joined when the group formed. Maybe we should make that visible somehow? (EDIT: Done, in the history-section)
  • How should the list be sorted? Alphabetically, or in the order in which they joined? Right now its mixed up, we either need to move Martti Ahtisaari to the bottom, above the two new ones, or restore alphabetic order. I dont know which is better. (EDIT: Resolved. The list is alphabetically, the history-section shows the timeline of events)
  • Not strictly related to this article, but for consistency, in the articles about Hina Jilani and Ernesto Zedillo (and for all other members for that matter), their involvement with the Elders should also be mentioned in these articles. (EDIT: Done.)

(EDIT: Credit for doing most of this so far goes to KRochanakorn (talk). I am thankful for the job she did, this article is in much better shape now. Be aware that she works for The Elders, but as long as her contributions are as well-sourced as they are and as long as there are no attempts of foul play that should be no problem.)

I am a really bad writer, thats why i did not do more. 178.10.105.12 (talk) 16:03, 14 July 2013 (UTC) (And i just edited my earlier post, to update it. My updates to my own post are all in round brackets. 178.2.58.242 (talk) 05:13, 27 July 2013 (UTC))Reply

Hi there!

These are really great suggestions; thanks for getting this process started! I have some time today so will get going with making the changes you flagged above.

In terms of the list, I think perhaps it would make sense to restore alphabetical order. To take into account the good point that Martti Ahtisaari, Hina Jilani and Ernesto Zedillo joined after the launch in 2007, we could make this visible in the 'History' section. I think this information would flow quite well from the paragraph about the launch. It would also make sense to put the dates here - we can put in a footnote with a link to the press release announcing the new Elders.

Thanks very much!

Best wishes, Kasita 17 July 2013 — Preceding unsigned comment added by KRochanakorn (talkcontribs) 10:18, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much for what you did with my suggestions, i like the work you did in the history section and with adding sources and stuff, i think that section is now properly updated. In the future, as more members join or retire, it will be easy to do something like a graphical timeline, because the data is all neatly in one place. I also like the list, because the dates when members joined are so clearly visible in the history section now. (And yes i am the same guy, i just have a variable IP, i really need to get an account one of these days). 188.104.97.98 (talk) 03:01, 18 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

Thank you again for the suggestions! I've now also ensured that related pages (including for Jilani, Zedillo and other Elders) have been updated to reflect the two new Elders' membership of the group.

Best wishes, Kasita
