Further research?

Danny Guilfoyle, citing Bear Family liner notes in his post at Soul-Patrol.com[1], writes that there is absolutely no record anywhere of the names of the members of the Eagles.

Guilfoyle does, however, add more information than I've seen anywhere else:

The Eagles were discovered in Washington, DC by Fred Foster, who later founded Monument records. Fred brought the Eagles to Mercury records in early 1954 and their first single was released in June with "Please, Please" as the A

side and "Trying To Get To You" as the B side.

"Trying.." was actually written in 20 minutes by the songwriting team of Charlie Singleton and Rose Marie McCoy after they heard the group's style.

Neither song made the charts. Foster claims that it was a strong selling disc, but I have never seen anything but a pink "Promotional" version of the 45 rpm, which I have had since the early 60's. I've only seen 2 or 3 other copies of the 45 through all my years as a DJ and avid collector, and they were all pink promos.

According to a Bear Family album of the Eagles out of Germany that I got in 1989, there is absolutely no record anywhere of the names of the members of the Eagles. They did not write their own material and according to records, the group disbanded by early 1955.

Additional tracks on Bear Family LP

The Bear Family LP referred to by Guilfoyle was Trying To Get To You, apparently issued in 1989.[2] It has three additional tracks not issued (as far as I can see) on Mercury or any other label: "Do You Need Me (Like I Need You)", "Just Right" and "I Stole A Rose".

"I Stole A Rose" may be the Sammy Gallop - Fred Jay song (US Copyright Office 1956, renewed 1984, RE0000198656) and presumably the song released by Dick Hafner (Haffner?) on Fraternity #754 in 1957.[3]

Googler beware!

It is common to find webpages that confuse these Eagles with the rock band. As far as I can see, the famous Eagles never recorded "Trying To Get To You", though you will see it listed under their name.

All Music Guide's supposed review of the Bear Family album Trying To Get To You [4] seems to be a review of an unconnected Johnnie Taylor album. (Now fixed.)Lyn50 (talk) 22:07, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
