Image copyright problem with Image:Dyke Railway Trail sign.jpg edit

The image Image:Dyke Railway Trail sign.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Name of retired guard edit

Hello there, I'm keen to add the name of the retired guard to this article. I thought I had added a legitimate citation, but it seems not. It is a copy of the 1901 census that shows the man, that he's living in a railway carriage at the Dyke and that he is the proprietor. Can I upload the image for your consideration? Any assistance so I can have this information added would be gratefully received. Brightonnmrb (talk) 08:38, 29 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

(edit conflict) Your source is a page from a census. It tells us that Peter Thornton, who lived at Dyke Station in a railway carriage, was a coffee restaurant proprietor. It does not tell us what his former occupation was, nor that the coffee restaurant concerned was at The Dyke station.
You need to be very careful of WP:SYNTH, and use reliable third-party sources. Please also be mindful of what we consider to be encyclopedic content. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:07, 29 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your kind advice.
I would like to add that I can cite previous census records and railway documents that show his career on the railways, from porter, then policeman and finally guard.
As for the 1901 census not stating where the coffee restaurant was, I cannot see how it could be construed to be anywhere other than the Dyke station.

The page used to say 'the facilities were said to be operated by a retired railway guard'. I was simply wanting to add detail to this.

Thornton might have lived in the converted carriage at The Dyke, and commuted to Brighton to work in a restaurant there. We don't know for sure; we must not draw our own conclusions. Working through census records etc. is against the policy on original research. We need a single published source which explicitly states all of this, per the policy on verifiability. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:23, 29 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
