The Versatiles were Kripp Johnson, Chuck Jackson, Don Jackson, Arthur Budd and Edward Everette after Mercury won the lawsuit over the usage of the name Del Vikings (no matter the spelling). Some explanation of the various spellings of the band's name is probably called for. As far as I can determine, mainly from images of the original record labels at Discogs, releases came out as follows:

There is one single recording where they are spelled that way. The B-side of "What Made Maggie Run" (FB-210) on the Fee Bee label from 1957.

The correct spelling - One or two L ?

They are spelled with one L in three newspaper reports from late 1956. The double L variant appears on the first two Fee Bee records (205 and 210A) in early 1957, on the Dot release 15538 and in a report in Cash Box magazine (01/29/1957). In another report in the same issue they were misspelled "Bell Vikings". The strangest one is the third record FB-210C (same constellation of group members), on the A side they are spelled with double L and on the B side with one L. On the fourth record (Fee Bee 214) - Whispering Bells/Don't Be A Fool - they are spelled with one L on both sides. At the same time, DOT released the same record with the double L variant.

When the contract with Mercury expired in May 1959 (Mercury had the rights to the name Del Vikings no matter what spelling, but only used the variant with one L), all re-releases (of Fee Bee Masters) could now be published under the name "Dell-Vikings". Averbach (Fee Bee) and DOT used the Dell Vikings spelling for all subsequent re-releases. (also Bim Bam Boom, Eedee and Blue Sky) From 1960 on, with the founding of "The New ... Del Vikings" (new constellation with Kripp Johnson, Clarence Quick and 4 new guys) at Alpine and 1961 at ABC, the group wrote itself with one L. All re-releases of Fee Bee Masters with double L:

Article & hyphen

Both the article "The" and the hyphen are meaningless in my opinion and just further spellings. On a South African pressing there is also a version without a gap, i.e. DELVIKINGS. The difference in spelling (one or two L) has nothing to do with the constellation of the group members and only to a limited extent with the record label. It's probably like Gus Backus said - a typo. As I suspect from Averbach's many spelling mistakes, maybe even an intentional one. Averbach had a certain affinity for alternative spellings, here are some examples:

All other recordings under the record labels - Mercury, Luniverse, Alpine, ABC, Crown, Gateway and Scepter - are spelled with one L.

Needs more sources; accuracy issues

The article needs more sources, especially toward the end; there is a lot of unsourced stuff there. I have tagged it for that and for factual accuracy. Regarding accuracy, the first question I have is whether the group still exists in any form. I cannot find any indication of its existence online, but the article uses the present tense. Because I cannot find any indication that the group still exists, I have removed the infobox information on its years active (unclear) and on current and former members (also unclear). (Oddly, Norman Wright--who passed away in 2010--was listed as a current member.) If anyone knows of a source that shows that the group (or some offshoot of it) does still exist, we can re-add the information. SunCrow (talk) 21:07, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
