Question

This article mentions that the series featured the "inclusion of the first recurring gay character on American television." Why is this so important? Does Wikipedia mention the first television series to include a "recurring straight character?" I don't think these things are very important and it also lends itself to fomenting inequality between people. Are different people's rights being trampled upon by inclusion or lack of inclusion in issues like this? I mean, what if somebody who's ancestors happened to be Vikings asked to have a category started for "first recurring Viking characters" in a television series? Would all the "gay" supporters join in to support the Vikings' cause as well? It's not that I'm pro-gay or anti-gay - I just don't think this is the kind of thing that matters. I used to imagine that one day it would be obvious to people looking back. A monumental, unprecedented revolution unfolding in less than a century, the crescendo from tens, then hundreds, then thousands, then millions taking a risk which was first unthinkable and in the first decades especially incredibly dangerous — and doing it not for themselves but for one another and the possibility of a different future. Do you understand the scope of that risk? Or the shared love and trust it entailed to walk off the edge of history, a seemingly flat plane millennia long at your back? Do you understand how this worked, why, why it happened then, the steps and missteps which led up to it or the central roles the press, media, and censorship played in the mid 20th century? The battles fought to be able to even discuss or depict our lives when this was itself grounds for obscenity charges? In the 60s things moved fast & when the Hays Code ended in 68, it had already lost its grip — but it was the threshold. If you’re not sure why a first like this in popular media in 1973 would be at least a bit notable to our history (a general “ours” — our history is each other’s) I would recommend studying it more before sharing one of those generic thought stoppers we’ve all heard our whole lives. “Fomenting inequality” lol 🙃.
