Puzzle: Plato and the Nines

edit

In this puzzle (No 108) it is stated that there are nine planets (that would be: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). However, Pluto was not discovered until 1930 and The Canterbury Puzzles was published in 1907. So the puzzle is: why did Dudeney speak of nine planets, shouldn't he have said eight? It isn't a casual slip, Dudeney meant to say nine; so why did he? (Since its discovery Pluto has been re-designated as a minor planet but that is irrelevant to my question.)
