"Successor" books

edit

Successor books are only slightly related to the original classic cookbook and even have a different title. Much like Webster's dictionary, the name is no longer copyrighted and anyone can publish "successor" books using either the original name or variations on it. -THB 19:34, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

The issue there isn't one of copyright, but of trademark. For example, early editions of the Encyclopædia Britannica are now in the public domain; however, the trademark for the Britannica is still active, so no one can publish a new encyclopedia that uses the name Britannica. Different Editions

edit

Note that the Bartleby.com edition is from the 1918 printing, rather than the original 1896 printing. I've switched the External links reference to point to the copy available on Michigan State University Library's Feeding America: The Historic American Cookbook Project.
