request for clarification edit

"Tolkien was not referring to 'as the eagle flies', but rather 'as the wolf runs':" <-- what is that supposed to mean? --90.196.43.188 (talk) 15:09, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

"As the eagle files" means a direct path, if you fly over the terrain you can go from one place to another in a straight line. "As the wolf runs", means the distance when you follow the terrain, having to go around mountains and lakes, or out of your way to a river crossing, etc. twfowler (talk) 16:48, 12 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Relevance? edit

The article makes a lot of claims that appear to be sourced to primary sources, although this is unclear as there are no citations present to verify where the content came from. However, there is no indication of why any the content is of any relevance to a Wikipedia reader - there is no context to discuss any of Tolkien's intended meanings or use, nor is there any third party analysis of any of the contents importance to the plot or meaning or interpretations of Tolkien's work. It is merely a regurgitation of plot details. An article must be based on third parties significant coverage of the subject outside of retelling of its existence in the story or plot. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 20:03, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Which is why I'm proposing the article to be merged to Minor places in Arda. You are completely right that this article is only a short plot summary, there is no out-of-universe discussion/analysis, and the recent AfD didn't manage to bring any to light, except passing mention in plot summaries, which are not enough for a stand alone article and won't solve the issues you're rightly pointing to. Per WP:WHYN, I think merging is the wisest and more constructive solution to retain the content on WP and to keep it in a manageable state. Minor places in Arda deals with...well, minor places in Arda, which, from the content, perfectly corresponds to what Thangorodrim is. There is no issue of size as the content is short and thus very well includable to the target page (this shows what it looks like) and the merge still allows for new content (including sources) to be added while not cluttering the page.Folken de Fanel (talk) 21:35, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • support merge There is nothing here that would be lost in a merge to the parent article (except perhaps for a few plot details - which no one has provided a source to show why they are significant or would be any loss to our readers if they were not included). If some of the sources that were claimed to exist during the AfD show up and provide enough out of universe detail, Thangorodrim could then be spun out of the parent article. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 22:02, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Per WP:MERGE, as there has been no opposition to the proposal in 7 days, I'm proceeding to the merge as outlined in my previous comment.Folken de Fanel (talk) 09:23, 20 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
