Controlled-Distribution Scanner Markets (CDSMs) edit

I came across this interesting (and horrifying!) description of an industry practice. I think it's worthy of inclusion in this article but I'm in a bit of a hurry so I'll just put it here as a placeholder for now:
Minimarkets are a form of test marketing that involves placing the product in a limited number of retail outlets and observing sales. CDSMs are a variation of that and involve scanner technology to track both the media exposure and buying habits of a large group of people Information Resources Inc. and ACNielsen offer it to packaged-goods manufacturers. The former uses eight US cities and tracks the buying habits of 100,000 people who have monitoring technology installed in their TV sets, report exposure to print media and purchase all their items through approved retailers. Various incentives such as lotteries are used to guarantee cooperation and the reward to the marketers are a record of cable TV viewing, media penetration family-by-family purchases and 95% of all store sales of tested items
