Serious problems with Chandler's urban data

The universal opinion of urban historians is that the city-size data in Chandler's books (esp. Four Thousand Year of Urban Growth) are not reliable, due to faulty historiographic research methods. Yet scholars who are not urban historians use these data as if they were reliable. I tried to get this across in a minor edit, but it does represent a problem in assessing the value of the work. Unfortunately no one has published a systematic evaluation of the city-size data.
