Population

This page seems to contain contradictory information about population - apparently 1296 in 2006, then approximately 13,000 (an order of magnitude higher). Currently neither of these assertions have been referenced, but I've added the "citation needed" template to each of them. Is the second assertion a typo, or are there really supposed to be ~11,700 people in the surrounding areas, yet only ~1,300 in the town?

I've updated the population to 2013 figures, and dropped the unsourced figure for "surrounding areas". Te Kauwhata has its own area unit in the census, and we don't usually give the surrounding area figures in this situation. However, the area unit which surrounds Te Kauwhata had a 2013 population of 2,538, and the next larger unit would be the Waikato District with 63,000, so I don't know where the figure of 11,700 came from.-gadfium 22:37, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

Meaning of name

Te Kauwhata does not mean “empty storehouse”. Anyone with knowledge of Māori, which I have, can see that. Adjectives in Māori are placed after the word they describe, not before. Secondly “kau” is not even an adjective! A kauwhata is a frame or rack where items were hung - a term often applied to a rack where fish and eel fillets were hung to dry. The reference given has some authority, as it is produced by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. However, I have also thought some of the translations in it seem dubious. 'Kauwhata' has several meanings according to maoridictionary.co.nz, and what is really needed is a suitable source giving the origins of the name for this particular place.-gadfium 22:22, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
