Proposed merger of Dahi Jatra to Tauthali edit

It was proposed that Dahi Jatra be merged to Tauthali due to an apparent lack of sources to confer independent notability to the former, as an alternative to deletion. Usedtobecool TALK  05:40, 6 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose-- I found three SIGCOVs from two independent RSes (national newspapers) for the 2019 event alone: this, this and this, which is enough to take Dahi Jatra past GNG. Any effort that needs to be expended on merging the articles can be better spent cleaning up Dahi Jatra and expanding it with the sources I've listed. Also, the article is unlikely to be asked to meet a strict requirements of GNG at an AFD because (a) it's a subject from the third world which cannot be expected to have the same level of online coverage as subjects from more affluent areas of the world and (b) the age, the uniqueness and the association with a major religion makes it easier to presume notability, even absent SIGCOV. Additions by 27.34.111.xxx edit

I trimmed the article down (adding a few clarifications/ rewordings on the way) assuming that it had degraded over time. Now it appears that this article was maintained that way by one anon.editor. Now that it's clear that it's just one person behind the IPs who by all appearances obviously cares about the article and wants to improve it, I would like to list my changes and the reasons for them, so, we can begin a proper conversation on the right way of expanding and improving the article (used diff):

  1. Removed the mention of "Hajipur" as an alternative name. Reason: We have no evidence for it, first time I was removing it, I thought it was a vandalism gone uncorrected.
  2. Settlement type (infobox): small city -> Village. Reason: Again, no evidence. Only source that we have that works (this)confirms that Tauthali is either a village or a municipality, and the demographics of it. From the population, it sure looks like a village and the body of the article (lead sentence) says it's a village. Infobox is a summary of the article and so must conform to the information presented in the actual prose of the article.
  3. Bagmati zone -> Province No. 3. Reason: I actually don't expect you to disagree on this. Administrative divisions were reorganised following the 2015 constitution.
  4. Removed 2013 census data. Reason: There was no census in 2013 and the cited source is about the 2001 census superceded by the 2011 census whose data is already there in the article.
  5. Rewrote the paragraph about the earthquake. Reason: It had confused many and was due two clarifications. I added the clarifications and I think generally improved it, without losing any information that was already there. So, I don't think we disagree on this either.
  6. Removed a few points from the "Attractions" list. Reason: It wasn't encyclopedic information and read like a tourism blog or something. Some removed statements quoted and reason (in addition to the fact that everything in the article is uncited save 2011 census data):
    • Newar community is the main attraction within itself. This reads like something a middle-schooler would list to make their answer have more bullet points. If someone is visiting a Newar village, it doesn't need saying that Newar community is going to be the main attraction.
    • If you are seeking for adventures than Trekking route from Kharidhungha to Tauthali covers around 10 km. While traveling this route you will be enjoying the scenery of mountains, hills, flora, fauna and the taste of cold water when you are thirsty. More suited for a tourism pamphlet.
    • Other three bullet points. While some of it could find a place in the article, these are extraordinary claims and need citation. Uncited material may be challenged and removed, which I am choosing to do for these claims.
  7. Removed facebook and youtube links. Reason: These count as spam. If the village development committee has an official website, that's what goes there. Other pages from reliable sources summarising the village may also be acceptable.
  8. Minimised the HUGE images (I think there were three, maybe four) and moved them to the left side, thumbnail size. Reason: We are writing an encyclopedia entry, not making pretty collages (there are other sites for that, I think). We can discuss which image is best suited as the main image of the article (seriously, you can just make you own choice, I have no strong preferences). The rest should either be removed altogether, or remain on the left or right as thumbnails (preferably on the right) or go into the gallery section at the bottom of the article. But they can not be restored as full size images substituting for the lack of prose in the article.

I think that's about it. The best way to improve the article would be to find significant coverages in reliable sources which can be used to expand the article. What we should absolutely not do, is fill the space with full size images. Look forward to your response. Best, Usedtobecool TALK  14:32, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Whatiskeptinname: you have not addressed most of the very serious concerns with your preferred version, and for the umpteenth time, restored multiple inaccuracies into the article, again. Please self-revert immediately and join the discussion. This is getting frustrating. Usedtobecool TALK  07:51, 12 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
@DESiegel:, I am pinging you per Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive 1032#Am I engaged in an edit war?. The IP is definitely Whatiskeptinname. They seem to come back whenever they please, revert me and go about their business. They do not engage, and in the meantime, the article is not only looking like a pamphlet but contains a number of inaccuracies. Since it looks like I am the only regular actually watching this page, I have half a mind to starting reverting again, as vandalism. Usedtobecool TALK  12:49, 13 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
@DESiegel: trying again as I'm not sure you got my last ping. Feel free to ignore it if you did but would rather not get involved.   Usedtobecool TALK  03:29, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Usedtobecool I did get your ping. I have not yet had time to look into this in detail. It is my plan to do so as soon as I can, but I can't absolutely promise when that will be. This is going to take more time at a gulp than other on-wiki stuff I have been doing. Do as you see fit, but do please try to avoid anything that might seem to be edit warriung, and remember that a content dispute with good faith, even if mistaken, on each side is not vandalism.
