– Adding macrons to remaining instances of Taupō where the page doesn't currently have them. Contemporary uses of Taupō (including the town and lake) use the macron, as does the district council in its own media. Given these all use the same name and are derived from the same source, it stands to reason that the macron should be used in all instances of Taupō. Turnagra (talk) 09:11, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Support moving the district and council. I've noticed that the District Council includes the macron, and uses the marketing name of "Great Lake Taupō" for the district. Do we have sources which use macrons when discussing the volcano and volcanic zone? Our articles use mostly old sources, although I did see [1] which uses a macron for the volcanic zone.-gadfium 17:56, 6 October 2021 (UTC) Also support moving the volcano and volcanic zone per the sources below.-gadfium 18:58, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
There seem to be a decent range of mostly recent articles which use the macron for the volcanic features - see 1, 2, and 3 for the volcanic zone and 1, 2 and 3 which refer to the volcano with a macron. Turnagra (talk) 18:17, 6 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Support Official name of the township and district - consistency for all pages referring to Taupō is reasonable. Contemporary use in media is mixed between Taupo and Taupō, however Taupō has become widely popular in media/official sources in the last five years. These pages should also be included in this move:
Some other pages could potentially be changed in the future (Taupo-nui-a-Tia College, Taupo Intermediate School, Taupo AFC, Taupo Airport), but since these are all organisations, it might be better to wait until they begin referring to themselves (or start being referred to in the press) with a macron first. --Prosperosity (talk) 00:04, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks, I thought I'd got them all. I'd seen the organisations that you listed, but opted not to include them for the same reason you mentioned. Would definitely support including Taupō railway and Taupō central articles in the move though. Turnagra (talk) 09:24, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Support moving all. Although the gazetteer lists "Taupo District" as the official district name (without the macron), every other use of Taupō in the gazetteer includes the macron, and as others have noted, the District Council themselves use the macron. Move discussion in progress

edit

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Taupo District Council which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 20:18, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

I think this bot notice is a bit late, as the move discussion has been closed. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 21:21, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Further to the move discussion about adding macrons to Māori place names

edit

Further to the above discussion about moving pages to show macrons in place names of Māori origin, such as Taupō, past minutes of the NZGB have noted that adding a macron to a Māori place name standardises its orthography but this does not alter the Māori name.[NZGB 1][NZGB 2] While I am not saying this is a position that Wikipedia should adopt, it does assist with understanding how the NZGB and the New Zealand Gazetteer considers the status of macrons in place names. The Treaty Settlements process also has a bearing on naming and the use of macrons, so this is an ongoing renaming process, too. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 22:29, 16 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

The NZGB noted LINZ legal advice that the addition of a macron to a recorded name standardises orthography and does not make it a different name.

Region Name – Environment Waikato

edit

I understand that the Waikato Regional Council no longer uses the "Environment Waikato" brand. It's name in this article should be reverted to "Waikato Regional Council". Rohivanion (talk) 00:15, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
