When I was around the loggers' sports shows back in the '60s (my folks ran Mission's) there were a number of competitors from palces like Tahsis and Woss Lake and such; I remember them always pronouncing it "Tarshish" or "Tarsheesh", and they weren't Maritimers (if you get the allusion).
