Choice of article title, T.J. Ryan vs Tom Ryan

edit

As there's been a bit of discussion on User Talk pages about the naming of this article, I just thought I'd raise the issue here in case a broader set of people want to comment. The article has been "T.J. Ryan" for quite a while but was renamed "Tom Ryan" because it is unusual for an article to be named with initials, but then returned to "T.J. Ryan". I'm an advocate of "T.J. Ryan" because, as a Queenslander, that's the only way I hear him called in books, etc. I suspect this may have come about because of the earlier Tommy Ryan (politician). The two men both had the full name of Thomas Joseph Ryan, both were Labor, and both represented the Electoral district of Barcoo, quite a coincidence given they don't appear to be related. So I can see that there may have been a need to distinguish between the two men that may have resulted in the T.J. moniker which I believe constitutes his WP:COMMONNAME but obviously to be a "common name" there should be a broad consensus among us that this is how he is commonly known. So I throw it open for further comment. Kerry (talk) 01:42, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

And there was also Thomas Ryan (1870–1943), a Labor politician in Victoria who was active in a similar time frame to T.J. Ryan, as another potential source of confusion. What a popular name it was! Kerry (talk) 01:49, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think is one of those rare cases in which the initials are indeed his present-day common name: as I mentioned to Frickeg on his talk page, "T. J. Ryan" queensland premier turns up vastly more results than "Tom Ryan" queensland premier. (The other obvious example of this situation being H. V. Evatt, which is drastically more common than any of the alternative names for him.) The Drover's Wife (talk) 04:06, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't have much more to say about this - I still don't like it much and think if we were serious about it we would be renaming the vast majority of pre-50s politicians (not something I support), but I'm not going to make a big deal of it. I will say that in general a lot of other articles seem to be at the full name in this instance (i.e. Thomas Joseph Ryan), for example Arthur Edward Moore. Who are these people? I assume a mixture of his children, siblings, and parents, but why are they all chucked together in a big table with no explanation? Ivar the Boneful (talk) 09:21, 30 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Ooh, good catch. What a mess! Given that these were added in a succession of IP edits back in 2010, and the reference is not helpful (doesn't refer to any of the listed references), and none of them appear to be even notable-adjacent, I have removed the section.
