Fisheries and Oceans Canada gives a length of 15 km for Sydney River, probably including Blacketts Lake, a reservoir that formed when the upper stretches were overtopped by flooding following construction of the Sysco dam in 1902.^[1]^: 6 G. C. Hood (talk) 02:40, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Blacketts Lake existed before the dam was built, though it was called by a different name, "Forks Lake", on maps of the period. See page 15 of the reference to this note to view a section of the Topographical Township Map of Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia published by A.F.
