Map Needed edit

Can a map be found to illustrate the article? CFLeon 03:12, 4 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why was the picture removed? And my request for a map has been deleted, also- rather than being answered why it's improper. CFLeon 07:08, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ok, now my map request has been reinstated. This is getting spooky... CFLeon 05:13, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Does anyone have figures as to the maximum safe passage size for a ship? [unsigned]

Sunda Strait with Sunda edit

As a Japanese, I wonder why the strait is named "Sunda Strait". And the revision made by user Hadiyana enlighten me. Thus I agree with Hadiyana's edit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Naruto kobayashi (talkcontribs) 05:36, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you, Naruto. What this user has done is right. --Clearradar (talk) 06:49, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
May I suggest you stop using sockpuppets/meatpuppets to attempt to distort the appearance of consensus. You have just been reverted by another administrator. I suggest if you feel that what you have done is right, Clearradar, you might respond to my post below and my repeated requests for you and your puppets to please explain why the location of a modern day strait should be described in terms of the location of a Kingdom that has not existed for hundreds of years. Please stop edit warring and using puppets to try to manipulate an appearance of consensus for your edit and instead respond to the objections that have already been raised. I have never edited this article before, and I know nothing about this subject so I think my reading of this article would be representative of the average reader who comes to Wikipedia to find out information about this strait. The first problem I see with your/Hadiyana's edit is that it says that the Sunda Strait is the strait between Sumatra and Sunda. But when I click on "Sunda" to learn more about it, I find myself redirected to Sunda Kingdom, an Indonesian History article, which says that this is an historical Kingdom that existed between the 7th and 16th centuries and covered regions now known as part of Jakarta, West Java and Central Java Provinces. Furthermore, the map used in this article to illustrate the strait and where it exists in relation to other locations, does not seem to include the "Sunda Kingdom" or "Sunda" and Wikipedia does not seem to have an article on any modern place Sunda as you describe in your edit. Thus it is very confusing to the reader because this article is about a strait that is known and exists today but you want to describe it's location in terms of a Kingdom that no longer exists? This might or might not make sense to a local resident but I don't believe it would make any sense to the average reader and would just leave them very confused. Additionally, there are problems with the English in your preferred version and while they are easy enough to fix, I think the original version is better and much clearer and easier to understand. Thus, overall, I feel the reversion was entirely appropriate at this point. It would help if you could explain why you believe the location of this strait should be described in terms of an historical Kingdom that no longer exists. Is it Sunda Strait or Straits? edit

Can someone more in the know determine if when referring to the strait that it is permissible to pluralize it although the article has it singular and there are articles that have it pluralized?Srednuas Lenoroc (talk) 13:34, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

No, sorry, that's against the law. On a more serious note, Google Books shows some 10,000 hits for "Sunda Straits", some in clearly reliable sources, so that does seem to be a valid alternative name. Huon (talk) 22:50, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) I think it is correct as "Strait"; nearly every reference I can find has it singular:
  • Even if you put "Sunda Straits" into Google, all the first page of responses have singular "Strait"
  • Geonames, which has it under the Indonesian name "Selat Sunda", gives "Sunda Strait" if you click on the name and then on the "Alternative names" icon (seventh from the left).
  • The Jakarta Post is a local source.
  • The Indonesian WP article is id:Selat Sunda, and Google Translate makes that "Sunda Strait"
  • The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World shows it as "Selat Sunda" but has an index entry for "Sunda Strait".

Incorrect map edit

I believe that one of the maps is wrong. I believe that what is 50 km on this map should be about 30 km instead. The strait is supposed to be 24 km, according to the text. I have compared with other maps. Please have a second look at this map. Calle Widmann (talk) 06:35, 24 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Fixed by the creator of the map. Merci beaucoup! Calle Widmann (talk) 05:07, 25 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
