Thief?

I'm a Straub, and I looked up my surname in two German name dictionaries several years back and the two name definitions I found in both dictionaries, which by the way had different authors and publishers, were "thief" and "scruffily haired, dishelved person." Also growing up I had heard from family and relatives that Straub meant thief, so amongst people with the name Straub this is an interesting family fact, not an offensive term, and that's why when I wrote this article I inserted this information.David Straub 01:32, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

- My German dictionary shows straub- as a verb root with two basic meanings: 1) to ruffle up, bristle; and 2) to struggle, resist, oppose. As an adjective, straubig, it's meaning is given as 1) bristling, stiff, rough, coarse; or 2) resisting, rebellious. Straub Variations
editI have been working on my genealogy since 1998, and since then I have built a 15,000+ page genealogy web site. Because my late mother was surnamed Straub, her surname has been the focus of my research, so it and related names take up some 3000 of the pages on my site. In 1998, I also started the RootsWeb Straub mailing list and have been its listadmin every since. Then, in 2004, I began the Straub Y-DNA Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA and started the RootsWeb STRAUB-DNA mailing list, both of which I continue to admin. These resources can be accessed from this central page: Genealogy of Straub, Traub, Straube, Stroop, and Strub. I only mention this to indicate I do have considerable experience with Straub (and similar names). However, unlike most family genealogists, who focus only on the genealogy of their own family, the DNA project requires that I be knowledgeable about all Straub/Stroup/etc. families. With that experience in mind...
I'm afraid I do not agree that the names listed as "spelling variations" of Straub are valid. They only look similar. The question is whether they have the same origin and whether any of them have converted from or to the Straub spelling. Almost none of the ones listed fulfill that qualification. This is comparable to someone saying Baker, Bacon, Barker, Barber, and Barner are variations of the same name, just because they're spelled similarly. Obviously, they're not related, and neither are nearly all the variations shown for Straub. The question is, what's to be done about it? I'm a bit of a Wikipedia novice when it comes to making major changes in an entry, so I'm reluctant to do so here. Yet, I'm very uncomfortable leaving this article alone. What should I do? Article structure?
editMaybe it would be better to split this one into "other Straub usages" and Straub (surname), similar to other names like Müller and its related articles' structure. Just noting as suggestion, but I have no experience in the conventions of name articles and disambigs myself. GermanJoe (talk) 04:12, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
