With regard to "The Other Victorians" - I think that the edition discussed here is not the 1966 edition, which focused on "The Lustful Turk" and various other Orientalist works. (I don't have copies of either edition to hand). The first edition was widely cited by Edward Said and other critics of Orientalism. Major 20th century intellectual needs full coverage

I'll second what the poster says above. This tiny stub falsifies the importance of a major figure, about whose work much has been written. Once again we have the Wikipedia effect, viewing everything that happened before the average editor was born through the wrong end of the telescope. He was an important literary sociologist and historian, combing certain realistic pornographic works, like My Secret Life, for observations of the new urban underclass forced into prostitution; combining what he found with what he had already published about Dickens's realism. (He wrote the big book which influenced all Dickens study to this day.) Nothing in this article would suggest to a contemporary student why Marcus was a major philosophic and personal influence on his colleague Edward Said, whose career he promoted; or why Foucault quotes him reverentially in his most influential work. Marcus's success opened the door for Foucault to be taken seriously in America. Like John D. Rosenberg, Marcus is in the direct line of transmission from the Columbia and New York School midcentury intellectual giants Trilling and Barzun to Said's post-colonial studies and Foucault's sexual post-modernism.Profhum (talk) 17:13, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
