pre FAC source check

  • Agree - the source is used only for his middle name, and his state of residence. hamiltonstone (talk) 11:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Some may have concerns with the IMDb cite
  • The only purpose for which IMDb is used - fairly extensively I admit - is for film and television cast listings of Dodd, and what character he played. Other similar sites (Four Word Film Review; Film.com) produce some similar results, though less extensive. Am I right to think they all face the same reliability questions? Do you know what is regarded as a reliable source? Because he is generally only in minor roles, he does not appear in books that only list the leads. hamiltonstone (talk) 11:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Since writing that note, I have been able to improve the situation using a reference book on Australian film, but at present am still stuck with IMDb for about half the television roles. hamiltonstone (talk) 23:54, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
  • I have tried to address this by explaining the identity of the author of the essay (who is also administrator of the site). hamiltonstone (talk) 11:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Not quite sure what to do here. The NFSA (an unimpeachable source) tells us that an actor called Bindi Williams played a lead role in the series Woobinda, and that there is a character in that series called Kevin Stevens who is an adopted Aboriginal boy. BUT the NFSA does not actually state that Williams is the actor playing that role. Gary Foley (the source you query and to which I have tried to give some credence) tells us this was the first series to have a regular Aboriginal actor, but uses no names. However only unreliable sources - classicaustraliantv, australian television information archive, and imdb - tell us that the actor playing Kevin Stevens is Bindi Williams. It seems to me to be an uncontroversial fact (that Williams played Stevens), but that link is critical to the more important claim, made by Foley, that this was the first series in which such acting took place. And the whole thing is relevant partly for context, but also to reject the claim made by one website (Milesago), that Dodd was the actor. What do I do?? hamiltonstone (talk) 11:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm not watchlisting this, so when you're set for me to relook, ping me. Ealdgyth - Talk 19:24, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Date of birth

According to the Korean War Nominal Roll, Dodd was born on 1 June 1928 [1]. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 06:44, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you so much for finding that. It is extremely useful, though a little perplexing. The birthplace doesn't square with other sources; nor does the length of service (though you would think the Department of Veterans Affairs would know the accurate figure). I'll integrate that info into the article soon. hamiltonstone (talk) 10:34, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Very welcome. :) The length of service in this source is only for Dodds' time in Korea, and does not include any prior or later service outside of his tour. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 10:46, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Source please!

"and limited by discrimination and typecasting."

Is there a source for this? Otherwise, why is it there? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.149.8.251 (talk) 15:44, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Because that is what the (cited) sentences that follow are about. Cheers. hamiltonstone (talk) 00:10, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

FAR discussion

I have placed the FAR for this article on hold, as the required article talk page notifications were not made prior to beginning the review. Please discuss here any identified issues with the article. Dana boomer (talk) 16:21, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Occurrences of IMDB

  • Appropriate use of source (please see archives at WP:RSN, IMDB is appropriate for some uses): Sources differ on whether Dodd had a part in Evil Angels (released as A Cry in the Dark outside of Australia and New Zealand),[37] the 1988 film about the Azaria Chamberlain disappearance, with Dodd's name not included in the cast list published by Australian Film 1978–1994,[38] but appearing in the longer cast listing provided by IMDb.[39]
  • Ditto, appropriate use: He said he worked with Rafferty on a fourth film, Wake in Fright, in 1971,[6] but Dodd's name does not appear in published cast lists.[18][19][20]
  • Riptide (1969), this one is tough, didn't find anything reliable
    • Woobinda – Animal Doctor (1970), tons of g-hits, hardly controversial use of Imdb
    • Spyforce (1972–73), [2]
    • Homicide (1974), [3]
    • Rush (1976) ... [4]
  • Flying Doctors can be sourced to this.
  • The Alice (2006) Don't know if this is reliable
    • My Country (2007) [5]
    • Broken Sun (2008) [6]

I just felt like adding this since this is the pettiest FAR I can ever recall seeing. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:56, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Sandy. I can do work on integrating these new sources to the article but not for another week - i'm on a break, and only just caught this as walking out the door...hamiltonstone (talk) 21:40, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
Update: I have replaced imdb as the reference for Spyforce, Homicide, Rush, Flying Doctors, My Country and Broken Sun. Imdb currently remains the only cited source for Riptide, Woobinda, and The Alice. The issue for Riptide and The Alice is locating any suitable alternative source. The issue for Woobinda as I see it as that plenty of sites have Dodd listed in the cast for the show, but all have the capacity for people to create accounts and make contributions, which I understand to be the objection to the use of imdb. There is clearly no question that Dodd acted in Woobinda - there are multiple entries, all consistent - the question is what source are WP editors prepared to accept? hamiltonstone (talk) 04:10, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Recent changes

I have just modified some recent changes to this article. I thought i would explain a couple here.

  • The article was tagged with a COI tag, but no explanation was provided at the talk page. Given that all of the content (other than that relating to the subject's recent death) was reviewed at FAC, it is not clear why such a tag would be used, and I have removed it. If there was a concern that I am somehow connected to the article subject, I am not, and never met him, nor am i the author of any of the cited sources.
  • I reinstated a sentence that was lost during an edit - i'm not sure why it was removed, given it was citing a reliable source and directly about the subject's role and experience as an actor, but if someone wants to explain, that's fine.

Rest of the changes looked helpful - thanks for all the recent interest in this piece.hamiltonstone (talk) 23:30, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

GA review (see here for criteria)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
    a (prose):   b (MoS):
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references):   b (citations to reliable sources):   c (OR):
Ref #5 doesn't mention Steve Dodd at all; Ref #17 doesn't mention Steve Dodd. All other online references check out.
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects):   b (focused):
It would be good to see a little more about his appearnaces in the later films, including the Matrix. There is nothing of his life outside of TV/Films. Is it not possible to get his assumed Dob from the military records?
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales):   b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
On hold for seven days fopr above issues to be addressed. Please comment here. I have watchlisted this page. Jezhotwells (talk) 13:44, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
I am happy with improvemnets that have been made which mean that in my opinion the article meets Good article status. One small point - it might be better to crop out the left hand side of the picture of Dodd, but this is not neccessary for GA status. Thanks for your hard work on a notable Austrailan actor. Responses

Thanks for the review.

  • You are correct that Dodd is not mentioned in ref 5 - it is a ref being provided for the fact that Rafferty was the star of Kangaroo, whereas ref 1 (see the filmography) is the ref that says that Dodd has a role in Kangaroo. Ok
  • You are correct that Dodd is not mentioned in ref 17 - it is a ref being provided for the fact that Overlanders was made in 1946. This is an important fact in establishing the chronological range of Dodd's career. Hang on, there's a problem - the hyperlink at ref 17 links to the wrong info at the NFSA. Something's happened here. Let me get back to you. hamiltonstone (talk) 22:29, 9 November 2009 (UTC) You were right about reference 17. It had been intended to provide a date for overlanders, but there was a problem with the linking at the National Film and Sound Archive. In any case, i have replaced it with a moe stable reference - number 5 in fact! hamiltonstone (talk) 22:43, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Regarding his more recent career: i will go back over the sources identified, but i don't think anything more has been written. Dodd is notable for the length of his career and some of his parts, but in general he is a minor character in any particular film, and thus is generally not mentioned in reviews etc.
    • OK, I understand
  • Regarding his life outside film and TV: you mention getting a DOB from military records. That may be possible, but i don't even know if the relevant records are in the public domain, let alone where they might be found. His agent's site indicates the age of character he is suitable to play and, of course, we know he appeared in a film in 1946, but I've no other info on such matters. This information might be considered necessary at FA, but given that it is not in any of the fairly extensive sources that i've located, i'm hoping it is not a barrier to GA.
    • Yes, that was just a suggestion. I have found a photograph which appears to be PD at [7].
  • Genius! I'm impressed. Have uploaded it at commons and included it in the article. Anything else? hamiltonstone (talk) 23:08, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
  • On an unrelated point: do you have a view about the format and referencing of the filmography?
    • I haven't seen a filmography exactly like that but don't see that there is anything wrong with it. Well laid out, summarizes the information.
  • I am checking a bookfolder of material at the National Library today. If info isn't there, it probably isn't anywhere. I'll leave a post once that's done. regards, hamiltonstone (talk) 22:43, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Update

  • Thanks Jez, your feedback pushed me to get some 1970s newspaper articles from the National Library. That has hopefully exhausted the likely sources. They gave me quite a lot of new detail - though not the particular items you had been looking for. See what you think. hamiltonstone (talk) 03:09, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
