It's known as the Cradle of Humankind, not humanity.

preservation edit

A usual site has a reason that it was suited for preservation. Since the behaviour of early hominids is hard to reconstruct, and where traits would decide locations, i think reasons and methods as well as overall state of preservation of hominids in situ are of greatest importance. So for example in sterkfontein or markapansgat many of the specimen (all?) have been found in pit's that may or may not funcioned as a trap, burial site (eg. "Zin", no i think 'the black skull' is suggestive of not having end up there up itself), sth. with predators (that at the same time died their themselves) etc. Since it is anyhow hard to reconstruct any traits or iow. reasons for their existence in situ, i think the subject deserves attention in wikipedia, as it is a geological reconstruction that is nowadays allways done at least to the point deposition methods etc. are proven. I know plenty of random facts about such strata, yet in covering the subject wiki is not allways a great help. this page rg. is dedicated to the site after all.24.132.170.252 (talk) 21:45, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

New fossils? edit

London Daily Telegraph - at this link: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/evolution/7550033/Missing-link-between-man-and-apes-found.html - suggests strongly there will be an announcement on 8th April 2010, about a new hominid fossil, understood to be a nearly/partially complete skeleton. The Newspaper suggests this will be a new species in the genus Homo. Speculation so far, but the article states that South African President Jacob Zuma has already visited.
