This is a rather silly entry. Wikipedia has become a forum for self-promotion. Glad someone is calling these autobiographies out. ----Eben Anderson

I'm wondering the same thing! Wikipedia is not supposed to be a place for egomaniacs to write their autobiographies. Jay Rosen just got busted for his self-promotion, and Stephen Venables obviously got busted with his pants down, too. If they're notable enough, others will write their Wikipedia entries for them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.89.147.206 (talk) 17:44, 31 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Why is this page being protected? It is pretty obvious from the discussions page that Mr. Venables authored this Wikipedia article on himself, and it's also pretty apparent that Mr. Venables has a long history of getting himself in trouble on mountains, getting others to rescue him sometimes at great expense to themselves (including amputated fingers due to frostbite) and then Mr. Venables writing books about what a great climber he is. Wikipedia is not supposed to be a forum for writing complimentary autobiographies to push book sales and speakers' gigs.

A question for you. Why do you insist on remaining anonymous? If your repetitive series of defamatory remarks came with your name (even a nickname) attached (you claim to be a well-known mountaineer so presumably have stuck your neck out on occasion) then they would be a lot more credible. Instead they seem like a bunch of ill-mannered rants from someone who has achieved much less in their life than Mr Venables and for some reason cannot get over the fact. Why is this article semi-protected for so many years?

Stephen Venables is a pretty non-controversial British alpinist - why it is still protected for so many years?78.18.249.143 (talk) 00:18, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Given the persistent attack editing that necessitated the page protection in the first place, I think "pretty non-controversial" is in question. I wasn't the protector, and considering how long your comment went unresponded to I think the protector may not even have seen it (although admittedly they are still around the pedia), but you can always go to WP:RFPP to post a "decrease protection" request if you feel strongly about it.
