Title in title actually broken

edit

As I found it:

His most recent book is 1998's ''Precious Nonsense: The Gettysburg Address, Ben Jonson's Epitaphs on His Children, and ''Twelfth Night'''.

This formats with Twelfth Night in regular font (possibly intended), and a bold period (certainly not intended):

His most recent book is 1998's Precious Nonsense: The Gettysburg Address, Ben Jonson's Epitaphs on His Children, and Twelfth Night.

There's a rather lame consensus to toggle titles within titles, even in the confusing case where the embedded title lies at the very end. But that neglects "The Gettysburg Address", which some sources out there, as a solo title, would italicise, and others might set in double quotes. Set nested inside another title? Crickets from the OCD title-editor pond.

I've added an HTML comment to the page text with the URL above, but otherwise I'm leaving this broken. Your move. My preference would be straight italics stem to stern. — MaxEnt 03:02, 30 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

@MaxEnt: The MoS is a guideline, not a policy, so feel free to ignore it if adhering to it would be detrimental to the `pedia. However, MOS:TITLE specifically says that titles of speeches should be enclosed in double quotes, so it does contain guidance on that issue. A better question is, perhaps, whether the Jonson part of Booth's title is in itself, wholly or partially, a title? Jonson was explicitly concerned with the publication and presentation of his own work, so I wouldn't, without checking, assume that he did not publish a quarto titled Ben Jonson's Epitaphs on His Children or Epitaphs on His Children or Epitaphs (or as a collection of poems or whatever). --Xover (talk) 05:29, 30 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
