This part is very misleading edit

A gymnasium which was known as het Stellenbossche Gymnasium was established in 1866. In 1874 some higher classes became Victoria College and then in 1918 University of Stellenbosch. The first men's hostel to be established in Stellenbosch was Wilgenhof. In 1909 an old boy of the school, Paul Roos, captain of the first team to be called the Springboks, was invited to become the sixth rector of the school. He remained rector till 1940. On his retirement the school's name was changed to Paul Roos Gymnasium.

-It almost sounds like US was renamed to Paul Roos Gym !? Wouldn't it be more prudent to keep to a more structured time line when compiling historical paragraphs ? purefreak (talk) 08:43, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Origin of name edit

Gregorydavid, I'd really like to know where you get your information. I have never heard anyone claim Stellenbosch was also named after van der stel's wife (who is called Johanna Jacoba Six). --Janto 14:59, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Content on Stellenbosch edit

Hi Janto, Yes, I went back and contributed the info I found on Johanna Jacoba Six and I see you are passionate about Stellenbosch. If so then I am sure you will agree that some of the sections need to be re-written to improve overall result.. Regards Gregorydavid 09:00, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Removing biased content edit

Today I removed this content: "Until recently the wealthy wine growing nature of the area meant that it had a large Gini coefficient, although this is changing."

While there may be some truth in the statement I hav enot seen any data to back up the claim. Also I think Stellenbosch has been unfairly singled out as the only town on Wikipedia that is linked directly to the Gini coefficient article. All sorts of means were resorted to by other wine farmers to compete with cape wines. Gregorydavid 08:06, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject South Africa assessment edit

I've assessed this article as C-Class. Could easily become a B-Class article if attention is paid to style and making sure that everything is cited properly. Ron2K (talk) 13:30, 24 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Comment on the status of Stellenbosch edit

Stellenbosch, along with the neighbouring town of Franschhoek (to the east) and the hamlets of Pniel and Dwarsrivier (to the east) and Klapmuts (to the north), today forms the Greater Stellenbosch Municiple area. Stellenbosch is autonomous, and does NOT form part of the greater Cape Town Metropolitan area. The statement in the second para is incorrect.

Population seems very wrong edit

19 000 inhabitants? Can't be. Stellenbosch Local Municipality#Geography references the 2001 census and lists 44 160 for Stellenbosch and 14 637 for Khayamandi (which should be included in the population count for any article on Stellenbosch, as Khayamandi cannot logically be seperated from the town).

Can someone figure out where it went wrong? — Gk sa (talk) 18:21, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ah. If I look at the cited source, and go back one level, it names several "main places" within the Stellenbosch Municipality that should count towards the population of the town proper, not just the main place called "Stellenbosch":
Name Type Population Area (km²)
Brandwacht Main Place 265 0.25
Cloetesville Main Place 15,390 1.72
Dalsig Main Place 1,234 1.40
Idasvallei Main Place 8,762 2.10
Jamestown Main Place 2,840 1.62
Khayamandi Main Place 24,645 1.54
La Colline Main Place 1,497 0.48
Onder Papegaaiberg Main Place 1,504 1.78
Paradyskloof Main Place 1,614 1.29
Stellenbosch Main Place 19,068 8.24
Tennantville Main Place 563 0.11
Welgevonden Main Place 2,493 0.62
While these areas are often called suburbs, it is more in the sense of neighbourhood than in the sense of exurb. They are not areas that arose independently of the town, and later came to be peripheral to it - they represent the expanding edge of a growing town. And, excluding areas such as Cloetesville, Idas Valley and Khayamandi from the town's population count could be seen as profoundly racist. And let's face it, each of the articles for these places link back to Stellenbosch while it is explained that they are part of the town. — Gk sa (talk) 19:08, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
This is one of the unfortunate cases where using the data directly from a single main place is clearly wrong. After seeing your first message I'd already come to the same conclusion as you about the inclusion of the other main places, except that you missed one (Pappegaai). I've updated the infobox accordingly. - htonl (talk) 19:43, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
